shagina,

Earthen lamps and lamps made out of brass, bronze, copper, silver or gold are the ones that are ideal to light a lamp.

To start with, light your lamp jothis using sesame oil and wicks made out of cotton. First pour the oil in the lamp and then place the wick in it.

It's ideal if you can light two lamps with a wick in each, but if you want to make do with just one lamp, then light two wicks in that lamp. The lighted wick should face East.

Lamp Shlokam

(This sloka is to be recited while lighting lamp)

Subham Karoti Kalyanam Arogyam Dhana Sampadah

Shatru Buddhi Vinashaya Dipa Jyotir Namostute

Deepajyothi Parabrahma Deepajyothi Janardhana

Deepo me hara tu paapam Deepaa Jyothir Namostute

If you can not get ready made cotton wicks, you may roll your own using cotton balls. You can place a thin strand of cotton between the palms of your hands and roll it into a wick. You may have to repeat the procedure many times before you get a wick that's ready for use. When you do this, you should roll the cotton in one direction only, not in both directions.

Closely associated with lamp jothi worship is the use of incense sticks in worship. Light a minimum of two incense sticks along with your lamp jothis.

Lamp jothis and incense have the power to neutralize negative forces since they bring the divine inside your house. They are a simple way of marshalling the divine force to drive away the negative forces from your house.

Doopam has the power to drive away negative forces and ensure a peaceful, spritual atmosphere.

Doopam is an ideal offering to God. Doopam in jeeva samadhi (the tomb shrines of Siddhas) can solve a lot of our material and spiritual problems.

Hi Shagina, The lamp should always be lit in the East-West direction. The ideal way is the amp facing the east direction. For hindus, the east direction is considered very special and auspicious as the sun rises in the east, and we consider using this direction as a tribute to Surya Bhagawan. You can have one lamp(made of either brass or silver) in the pooja room and light it everyday. But the wick has to be necessarily changed everyday. Re-lighting the same wick adding some oil to it should be avoided. All the God images int the pooja room should also face east-west, or preferably east direction. You should light the lamp once in the morning, and then at sandhya kaal(evening 5:30-6:30). Goddess Lakshmi is said to be entering our house during these times. Hope this helps.

Normally people say that we should not face south direction while doing puja. God's images should also not face south. A lamp is lit before the image of God. Number of times does not matter.

Hi Shagina,

The puja area/room should be kept in the east, north or north-east coner of your house. It should never be kept in teh south as you shoud not be facing south while doing puja.

The idols of the gods should be kept in the north-east portion of the puja room or in the east or west direction of the house.

The lamp should always be lit in front of god, facing the idols. You should stand facing the north or east direction. You can light the lamp wice a day, once in the morning after a bath and in the evening aroung 6' o clock.

god bless!

Hello Shagina, Ideally Pooja room would be in the northeast area of the home, which is isha-kona (God’s corner) according to vaastu-shastra.Assign a room or a fixed place (preferably a secluded corner) for worship in your house. Gods should face east.During puja lamps are lighted and usually placed on each side of the main worship area. The purpose is both practical and symbolic.Fire is one of the five basic elements of matter (the others being earth, water, air and space (pancha-maha-bhuta ) and so the five flames represent these five elements of matter. For daily paractice 2 wicks are adequate. one facing east and one facin west. It is always better to use new wicks and fresh oild daily. you should never lit the lamp repeatedly using the oil of previous days. if there is balance of oil you can store and use it on saturdays which is the day of lord Shiva- deity for removing shani dosha. It is always preferable to lit the lamp twice daily . one in the early morning and next in the evening before twilight. There are no firm rules regarding the worship and setup of the puja room.Complete devotion is what is needed.

East is the best, north is secondary and the others are not preferred.Early morning immediately after washing yourself and in the evening. This will be the daily routine. the numbers depending on the other occasions. This will be the lamp for prayer. Deities too same as lamp. while the lamp and deities faces the east, you will be facing north. there is a video on lighting a lamp on an indian web site.

You can light all the faces of lamp. Then there is no question of direction. If there is only one then let it be face east which is better. You keep the god facing again east which is the best direction. Then you see the god and pray. In fact you are facing west.

Dear Shagina, As per vaastu norms, the puja room shouldnot be in the bed room and it may be a separate room or in kitchen also. The west or east wall is the most suitable location where you can put the Idol or photo of your God. You can put it on the floor on an elevated small platform or hang it on the wall. So facing of GOD will be in east or west direction only. According to this, the facing of lamp and yours will be east or west. You can put any odd numbered flames in the same lamp ie 1 or 3 or 5. During worship, one lamp with multiple flames or many lamps (if you wish) can be put and there is no such restrictions. Your devotion to your Ista -Devta counts very much.

In general the lamp should be facing east and the faces of the lamps should be facing east and north. It should never face south. You could light the lamps twice a day. Once in the morning and the other in the evening.

The lamp is lit according to the way the figures or photos are kept in the pooja room.

If the picture of figurine is kept facing East, the person should sit on the right side facing North. If it faces North, they should sit facing East. They should not sit in front of the image facing it directly. If these two directions are not possible, then we can set the image facing West and sit in front of the Image facing East and perform pooja. One should not sit on the right side facing South to perform pooja. One should not sit on the left side of the Image. The Image should not be set facing South. The person should not sit facing South. It is not proper according to sasthra to eat food prior to performing the pooja. When it is possible, one should always learn from a Guru about the proper sasthras and rules and receive deeksha before performing pooja at home. http://www.bnaiyer.com/studies/d-pu…

The lamp is lit in the same direction as the figures, the way the figures are kept in the pooja room or in the prayer room or the place where you have kept the picture, photo. You can light it twice a day, in the morning after the bath and in the evening around 6 pm (sunset time)

Sometimes, we have akanda deepa, these are special occasions though.

Place the lamp inside a plate. Also one may have two wicks, or sometimes on special occassions, you can have 5 wicks facing all directions.

The lamp should preferrably be an open lamp. Use a cotton wick and seasame oil only. The wick should face eastwards.

The lamp should be lit only once. I am afraid I did not understand what you meant by that. Do you mean how long should it burn? That is upto you. But it should burn at least as long as you are doing your prayers and puja.

The lighting of ‘diya’ or lamp at home is considered highly auspiciousness as it brings prosperity and good health. The daily evening lamp lit at home also gives us an opportunity to ponder over one’s omissions and commissions in a day. In every Hindu home a lamp or ‘diya’ is lit daily before a Hindu deity or any symbol associated with Hinduism. Many Hindus also perform an ‘arati’ with the traditional oil lamp. The lamp is lit in the morning or evening or both morning and evening. In some houses the lamp is maintained continuously and is known Akhand Deep or Akhanda Diya. The light in the lamp symbolizes knowledge. It removes darkness, which symbolizes ignorance. Thus light symbolizes Brahman.

Generally in south india we lit the Nilavilakku -litting - two wicks - east and west direction. You can lit 3 or 5,7 etc. nos. of wicks as per your interest. god/Idol can face to east direction. Youc an litt the diya in front of the idol with one facing to the idol and the other to the opposite direction.
