Hi

You can follow this method:

1. Insert cursor where you wish to place the footnote reference number: Hitler, a depressed “Nazi leader of a Communist Germany” who spurred a huge “anti-semantic” movement through a terrifying “Gespacho,” launched “Operation Barbarella” while the English “vanely hoped for peas.” The war began turning around, though, when the “Allies landed near Italy's toe and gradually advanced up her leg.” [1] 2. Go to Insert Menu à Footnote à Insert Footnote (check “bottom of page” button) ***DO NOT SELECT “ENDNOTE / end of document”*** Numbering = (check “AutoNumber” (1, 2, 3) ) 3. Click “OK” 4. A footnote window automatically opens, with the appropriate footnote number and the cursor is automatically in position. (MS Word automatically keeps track of your numbering, and keeps footnotes on the same page as their references.) 5. Type in the citation. 6. Return to the main body of your essay by clicking on it (scroll up if needed).

A footnote is indeed just that, a note that is placed within a scholarly paper or a book at the bottom of the page. The footnote is usually referring to a reference of something. The intent is to make the reading easier for the reader versus long drawn out notes. Normally you will work with footnotes if you are writing in APA or MLA style which would likely be for academic learning purposes.

Instructions:

1)Add a footnote: Click on the document where you would like to add the footnote. Click Insert on the menu bar and then point the cursor to Reference.

2)Click Footnote on the sub menu. Then click the Insert button in the Footnote and Endnote dialog box. Here a box will be displayed for you to enter the information that you wish to include in your footnote.

3)Modify the style of the footnote. Right click the note text in the note pane. Click Style on the shortcut menu. Click Footnote text. Click Modify and from there choose your font size and further style.

4)Close the Note pane by positioning the cursor on the Close button in the note pane. Click the Close button to remove the note pane from the document window.

Hello Anonymous, South Africa ! When you’re working on an academic paper, it is important to cite your references. Adding footnotes in Word is quite easy. Word automates the process so the numbering is always correct. Plus, if you make changes to the document, you don’t need to worry about the placement of the footnotes.

To insert footnotes, follow these steps:

1. Place the cursor where the footnote mark should be located 2. On the Insert menu, select Reference 3. On the Reference submenu, click Footnote… 4. Make sure Footnotes is selected in the Location section 5. Additionally, select Bottom of page, if it isn’t already 6. Click Insert

The footnote mark will appear at the selected location. Word will take you to the footnote section at the bottom of the page.

7. Enter the footnote text. Add formatting if desired

You can add footnotes in any order you want. Word automatically updates the numbering.

In Print Layout view, click where you want to insert the note reference mark. On the References tab, in the Footnotes group, click Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Word inserts the note reference mark and places the insertion point in the text area of the new footnote or endnote.

Keyboard shortcut To insert a footnote, press CTRL+ALT+F. To insert an endnote, press CTRL+ALT+D.

By default, Word places footnotes at the end of each page and endnotes at the end of the document.

Type the note text. Double-click the footnote or endnote reference mark to return to the reference mark in the document. To change the location or format of footnotes or endnotes, click the Footnote & Endnote Dialog Box Launcher, and do one of the following: To convert footnotes to endnotes or endnotes to footnotes, under Location choose either Footnotes or Endnotes and then click Convert. In the Convert Notes dialog box, click OK. To change the numbering format, click the desired formatting in the Number format box and click Apply. To use a custom mark instead of a traditional number format, click Symbol next to Custom mark, and then choose a mark from the available symbols. This will not change the existing note reference marks. It will only add new ones.
