As we grow older our metabolism slows down which means that we burn fewer and fewer calories for basic body functions. This in turn means that we need lesser and lesser food as we advance in age. Unfortunately, our appetites don't seem to decrease in proportion to the slow down and we continue to consume the same amount of food. We think that by reducing the fat content in the food we are taking care of the weight problem. But we should be conscious not just of fat but of how many total calories we are consuming. You might eat a 100% fat free food and still can get very fat if you consume a lot of calories through carbs and proteins. The excess calories settle down as abdominal fat because the fat storing cells called adipose cells are present mostly in the abdominal region which is the reason for pot belly. The only way to prevent pot belly and to reduce is to regularly exercise and keep a very strict watch on the number of calories we consume every day.

dont sleep immediately after meals, and make sure dont drink water after lunch or dinner.while having food if u want water just keep aside half glass of water and manage that amount of water while u have food.as per my knowledge,u take food it starts churning with all juices and acids ,but when u take the water it takes 20 mins to bring the water upto ur body temp, that is digestion is delayed for 20 mins.so how many times u take water it delays that much.meanwhile the stomach filled with food and water, is sagged.you observe ,generally the man who does labour work though he is lean he will be having pot belly, observe this. so after food dont drink water up to 1 1/2 to 2 hrs.follow this even for tiffins .there will be a lot of differance.i learnt this from a naturopathi doctor in his speeches.

Hi johar, Most of the people suffer from this problem, as the fat get deposited in this area due to lack of workouts and low metabolism. Try using cardamom powder daily 1/4 tsp with hot water in an empty stomach. As cardamon has the properties to burn fat especially around abdominal areas by increasing metabolic rate. You will notice the change with in a month. Try it.

Pot Belly or Beer belly, beer gut, is a physical human trait characterised by a horizontal overhang of fat above the waist, with little apparent fat on the rest of the body. The beer belly is usually associated with men (women tend to store excess fat in other areas such as the hips and buttocks). A lack of muscle tone in the abdominal muscles contributes to the appearance of the beer belly, with the overhang often increasing with age.The most effective way of trimming down a beer belly is believed to be the same as for reducing fat in other areas of the body. This involves reducing caloric intake and/or increasing caloric expenditure through increased activity, such as aerobic exercise and strength training. Contrary to popular belief, working the abdominal muscles doesn't target the fat next to the muscle.

Hello Bhavani,

After 30 yrs of age,the metabolism of the body changes.People cannot digest fats as easily as they did when they were younger.Excercise is essential too.Withour excercise, fat tends to accumulate in the body around muscle, and other organs. Most of us don't take much care regarding our diet, which is why by the age of 35-40,people tend to get pot bellies.

Regular excercise like walking, bending, stretching, even yoga and aerobic excercise helps to increase muscle in the body which in turn helps the body to burn fat more efficiently.

Our lifestyles have also changed a lot compared to what our granparents went through in their lifetimes. We have less physical work now, and more mental tensions.Tension also spikes up the adrenalin irregularly and this impacts the muscles in the long run, making us age faster too.

Excercise is essential to mainting fitness.Cycling, walking, skipping rope are good excercises that can be done by a helthy person. Those with heart disease and other ailments like diabetes should consult their doctor before starting excercise, particularly when they have never excercised until that point in their lives.

After 40 yrs of age,one should have regular cholesterol and blood sugar tests to ensure that they are healthy and the onset of these diseases can perhaps be slowed down,if not entirely eliminated by following a regimen of excercise and low fat, high fibre and protein diet.

Hope this helps you.Goodluck.

It is due to loss of certain vitamins and minerals , as due to constant pressure since early childhood in the present day world , poeple are unable to take care of themselves and at this age they sucuumb to the constant pressure of life.

As right from childhoos a person faces pressure of studies till 19/20 , then he enters into a job , afterwards into family life where he has to take care of children and his family, and ladies and gents in this process lose continuous vital substances of their bodies and belly is a result of this.

So the best way to reduce it is to reduce stress, proper diet and a good atmosphere.

Hi Bavani,

As people age, they tend to lose muscle - which is responsible for helping the body burn calories. The biggest culprits for a person's pot belly are carbohydrate and stress. When carbohydrates are not burned off by our body (in the form of energy), it tends to accumulate around the areas which the individual is genetically predisposed to gain fat around. Add to this the release of cortisol (a stress hormone) that makes a person hungry when stressed adds to the waistline.

The most effective way of losing a pot belly involves reducing caloric intake and/or increasing caloric expenditure through increased activity, such as aerobic exercise and strength training. However, exercise is not the only way to lose the pot belly. The most successful approaches typically combine a healthy, low-calorie diet that's also low in saturated fat and sugar.

it is bcoz the persons who do not have a minimum exercise for their abdomen the abdomen muscles unable to support ur abdominal contents against gravity so they get pot belly the way to reduce is by doing lower abdomen exercises this is as follows

lie down on ur back then raise ur legs up without bending them and hold for 2-4 minutes do this 3-4 times and twice daily and after doing this again raise ur legs and lower them a bit fast this will relieve pain i8n the muscles neverv discard it suddenly as this will cause to more looseness in ur abdomen ok

hi Bhavani,

Where we store fat (surplus calories) is largely a combination of gender, age and genetic inheritance. Men tend to store fat around their middle (apple shape), whereas women typically store fat around the pelvic region, hips, butt and thighs (pear shape). However, women are prone to develop an apple shape in mid-life, after menopause. This is because the female hormones are present in smaller amounts and so their shape tends to become more 'male'.Some health studies show that abdominal fat can develop as a result of stress. This is because the hormone cortisol is released during stress, and a high level of cortisol in the body appears to stimulate the storage of fat around the belly and abdomen.

The most effective way to lose fat is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat.

Lay on the ground with your feet firmly on the ground and your knees in the air.

Place your arms behind your head for support.

While keeping your stomach tight, light your head up off the ground.

Lower your head back down so it almost touches the ground.

Tip: To avoid bending your neck forward and straining it, try keeping your eyes on the ceiling while doing the crunches.

good luck!
