The University Grants Commission (UGC) provides financial assistance to eligible colleges which are included under Section 2(f)* and declared fit to receive central assistance (UGC grant) under Section 12 (B)** of UGC Act, 1956 as per approved pattern of assistance under various schemes. The number of colleges included under Section 2(f)/12(B) of UGC Act 1956 as on 31.3.2006 is 6014. Out of these, 5449 colleges have been declared eligible to receive central assistance, including UGC grants under Section 12(B)** of UGC Act 1956. Remaining 565 colleges are recognized under Section 2(1) of UGC Act 1956 but not yet declared fit for receiving central assistance as they do not fulfill the conditions laid down for such status.

* The UGC had notified Regulations for recognition of colleges under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956. The colleges are brought under the purview of UGC in terms of these Regulations as and when the proposals are received from the colleges for inclusion under Section 2(f) and they are found fit for inclusion as per the provisions contained in the Regulations.

** Apart from inclusion of colleges under Section 2(f), the UGC includes the Colleges under Section 12(B) of its Act in terms of Rules framed under the Act. This makes the colleges eligible for central assistance from the Government of India or any organization receiving funds from the Central Government.

There are hundreds of colleges to list out here which are approved. To find them statewise you can go to the followin link and findout.:

Hi Deepak,

University Grants Commission (UGC) www.ugc.ac.in… or All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) www.aicte.ernet.in… UGC and AICTE are the statutory bodies established by govt of India for monitoring educational standards. These bodies are responsible for evaluation and certification of colleges, institutes, deemed universities, foreign universities in India and national universities for running technical and non-technical courses in India. Importantly while taking admission to any college or university it is advised to all the students to check their approval either by UGC or AICTE.You can find information about the state wise list of approved colleges in India by UGC at http://www.ugc.ac.in/inside/college… As its a long list it will be difficult to enlist here. These links provides general information about the recognized universities and colleges by UGC. The course, admission criteria and other details can be found out from the respective web links.more information about list of approved Institutes for technical courses (B.Tech, M.Tech, B.E) by AICTE at www.aicte.ernet.in… Apart from state and central university either recognized or funded or in case both, there are some other categories of school and colleges where admission can be sought. Broadly the categories are as follows.

Deemed Universities: These are the colleges/institutes which are given a status as university and the governing body is authorized to run various degree programs. Some of them are private and some are national bodies run by govt of India. The status as University is granted by UGC.

Autonomous Institutes: These are very similar to Deemed Universities. As the names suggests they are complete autonomy for running educational programs. The degree is awarded by the institute and carry equal weight.

Institutes of National Importance: These are the institute's set up by govt of India with a special purpose. Each institute is established taking into consideration national policies for economical.
