Topic: EDUCATION      Submitted on: Ammas.com
Subject: Advice on Aeronautics Schools in California

I'm interested in studying aeronautics, learning to pilot jets, joining the airforce at a high level. I'm told the best place to go is to the US. I'm from India but live in New Zealand now and have citizenship here, studying in secondary school. What are the schools I should be looking into in the USA, especially California. How do I prepare for them? What level of education must I achieve before I can join one of those schools? How does it work in the US? Any tips you can provide would be helpful. Thank you!

Dear Anonymous, http://www.flyingc.com/… http://www.ueet.nasa.gov/StudentSit… Aeronautics is the study of the science of flight. Aeronautics is the method of designing an airplane or other flying machine. There are four basic areas that aeronautical engineers must understand in order to be able to design planes. To design a plane, engineers must understand all of these elements. You may go to above sites to learn more on subjects of Aeronautics and Flying education. But you dont have to go USA for this,if you like right in Australia you have some institutions for same like one at:http://www.aerospace-aviation.com.a…

Dear Anonymous,

That's an interesting subject! I wish you best of luck and hope you get a great job in an airforce.

First of all, you will need to finish school in New Zealand and apply for an appropriate course in a US university. If you get an admission, you will need to apply for a student visa for USA (supplying your acceptance letter, proof that you have funds to pay for the course and your living). After finishing a course in aeronautics, you can join a pilot school either privately or through the US armed (they have an air force academy, see web address below) forces and apply for a job with them.

Here are some very useful sites I was able to find, they will give you lots of information:

www7.nationalacademies.org/aseb/

www.gradschools.com/listings/out/ae…

www.cds.caltech.edu/~shane/people/…

www.usemb-ankara.org.tr/IRC/SPACE/A…

www.af.mil…

www.airforce.com…

www.usafa.af.mil…

www.afrotc.com…

www.usafa.edu…

Hope this helps you.

Good luck!

Firstly if you want to join the airforce then the only country you will be able to join is New zealand as most arms forces are not open to non citizens for obvious reasons. Therefore if you want a career in the airforce then look into one in New Zealand as you will be able to start and they will teach you to fly. The airforce may well then pay for your further study

If you want to study aeronautical engineering then maybe look up a guide like petersons at www.petersons.com… that lists all of the undergraduate schools that would do aeronautical engineering and that would tell you their location, requirements etc. Obviously to study in the states you would need to do your SAT's and you would need to apply in the year before you are due to start your course. These courses maynot include learning to fly.

You canlearn to fly privately in the states and you need to be able to pay for your lessons.

Hi There is a list of US schools that offer aeronautics on the following site: http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/co…

Click on the name of the university to find out more about it. To get the university ranking click on the link that says "U.S News Ranking".

Make a shortlist of the schools you are interested in and then visit their individual websites (can be found by typing the university name in google).

Most universities have a published prospectus online and these detail admissions requirements. For example, the following is the website of Purdue's Aviation Technology Department, where you should find most of the information you need about applying there:http://www.tech.purdue.edu/at/…

The general requirements for most top universities are that you achieve high grades, score highly on the SATs have a good record of extra curricular activities and are able to get strong recommendations from your teachers.

It is a good idea to start this process at least a year in advance as it involves a lot of research, doing tests such as the SATs, writing statements of purpose, putting together a cv etc

Good Luck and write back if you need more help!

Hi,

Aeronautics is a vast subject. Its a good timely decision to choose your career. since you are

doing your secondary school i guess you must have basic knowledge in the fundamentals of

physcis. To pursue your career in Aeronautics you must have a strong foundation in Dynamics

which i guess you must have studies in physics. There are many engineering disciplines and

Physical science which have their application in aeronautics. For example, mechanical engg

principles in the design of the the plane/jet,flight mechanisms, aerodynamics, engine design &

performance,Simulation of airflow around jets,Electrical Engg in the control of the

systems,Integration of other mechanical systems etc. There are many paths to get aeronautics as

specialization. Studying in US is a good option. If you want to study in US it is best for you

to come US for your under-graduation as you will have good foundation. To do so you have to

write the SAT exam which is a general aptitude exam which will have basic mathematics and

English as subjects. To get a good score in SAT is the primary step to achieve your goal. Go to

this website for more information about SAT http://www.collegeboard.com/splash…

I dont know about education in newzeland but i think US has best schools for education in

aeronautics. Even in India we dont have aeronautics as specialization in all engineering

universities, but in US you will see that in almost every college. As an undergraduate of

aeronautics major, you will be exposed to right from theory to its application. There will be

even classes to register for Flight Instruction classes. As an non-american citizen its

difficult to have a career in US in Aeronautics unless you go for PhD, being that a sensitive

subject. If you are a citizen/permanent resident you will have plenty opportunities as soon as

you finish your Bachelors/Masters.There are really very good opportunities for aeronautics in

US. I have known some people who are non-US citizens, did their PhD and working with NASA now.

If you can go till PhD in aeronautics you will have a great career in US.

First I will advise you to have strong fundamentals in Dynamics subject as you will use many of

its principles in your future applications. Prepare well ahead for SAT. If you have a very good

score you can get admission in good schools. I dont know whether you will have any senior

projects before your graduation, but if there is a chance such a project related to aeronautics

will be very useful. Once you do your bachelors you can choose your sub-specialization for

further studies.

If you are not specific about california, there are many good schools in eastern US. But in

california the best school is University of california Berkeley. You can browse their website

for further information. www.berkeley.edu…. There are also many schools in califronia, but i am

listing some very good schools...

stanford university----www.stanford.edu… univ of southern califronia---www.usc.edu… Sanjose state university----www.sjsu.edu… University of Los Angeles----www.ucla.edu…

These are top rated schools in US for aeronautics..

www.mit.edu… www.harvard.edu… www.umich.edu… www.purdue.edu… www.msu.edu… www.utexas.edu…

For more information about schools you can visit

First, to the person who is placing remarks asking for source - please read the whole answer and the source usually mentioned at the end of answers

Now that out of the way,

Dear Anonymous,

If your intention is to join the airforce to pilot jets, then you have to understand that the air force trains you with their own program of pilot training. The airforce does not recruit training pilots for the airforce.

Since, you are a New Zealander, The RNZAF is a viable option for you. RNZAF liquidated its airforce under the labour government in the late nineties and it now operates a fleets of hercules planes and a variety of aircrafts. You could end up flying Iroquois helicopters or Orion, Hercules and 727 aircraft. You won’t always be up in the air, of course. Training as a pilot means, as your career progresses, you’ll have various roles including ground duties, further training and perhaps helping to run the squadron or base.

Qualification:

You must be at least 17

> A proven ability in English, Mathematics and a Science subject at Year 12 level. Physics is preferred but not essential

> NZ citizenship

> A reasonable standard of fitness. Medical restrictions also apply including eyesight, asthma, migraines, colour blindness and height. You may still be eligible if you wear glasses

Training:

Pilot Training Only after your initial basic military training can you begin your ‘Wings Course’. This is divided into 2 phases. Phase 1 – Over 37 weeks you’ll learn the basics and fundamentals of flying. This includes general handling, instrument navigation, night and formation flying. You’ll fly approximately 135 hours on the CT4E Airtrainer aircraft. Phase 2 – You’ll be streamed into one of the following roles and either do a further 14 weeks Helicoptor training, or 21 weeks of ground and flying training: > Helicopter Basic Course – 14 weeks flying the Bell 47 Sioux, in preparation for training as an Iroquois Pilot. > Multi-Engine Basic Course – 21 weeks flying a Beech King Air twin-engine aircraft, and approximately a further 18 months of consolidation flying in preparation for training as a Hercules, Boeing or Orion Pilot.

So, as you can see, you need to train privately to join airforce and prosper as a pilot!!

Another option for you is Royal Australian Airforce, where lot of Kiwi pilots end up working. Again, you can join the airforce by selection and get trained by their own program. Unlike Kiwis, the aussies have fighter crafts and excellent training facilities!

If you are still keen to train privately, in the US, then you have to look for an accredited training school. A comprehensive list of such schools is avaialbe at http://www.bestaviation.net/member_…. In fact, this is one of the most comprehensive portals for aviation training in the world!

If you decide to train in New Zealand, on your own, then remember that you are eligible to avail student loan from WINZ at market rate interest.

HAPPY FLYING!

I hope you have seen these sites: http://www.airforce.com/education/e… the details of the courses that you could fit in. As you know you have to be in US for certain span of years to get admitted to US force exception being coast Guard: Read more on http://forums.military.com/eve/ubb.…. Now as it is at an initial stage pleaes concentrate on your studies thr a good school in US. Some thing similar to what you want is done by Bob Muller check out on http://www.nccer.org/schooltocareer…. http://www.au.af.mil/au/ccaf/whowea… - For applied sciences useful in US air force. http://www.usmilitary.com/courseofa…- basic info. http://schools.armystudyguide.com/…- has the list of all schools, http://www.virginia.edu/registrar/r… - another school. and a college like :http://www.siu.edu/~asa/about.htm…

It will be better if you go in your local consulate and get the requisite information on the age, eligibility criteria and other options in aeronautical engineering. Would suggest better complete all your studies in US schools and then opt form an officers post, this way the years restriction will be met, and you would a better position in army. You can check the health related prerequisites on the site: http://www.military.com/Recruiting/….

Hope this is useful and All the Best in your future endeavors!
