Hi, You are right drinking alcohol has become a fashion in youngesters though moderately. But if it becomes a habit it is already crossing the line with harmful effects. If it is considered good for health in these western countries it is because most of them are climatically cold countries where t may be useful to keep warm.

Drinking alcohol moderately is good. But excess alcohol- more than 3 drinks for men and 2 drinks for women is bad for health. Drinking alcohol even occasionally gives a chance for a person to exceed limit. If a person self control then he/she can do it . if not sure then it is better not to start the habit

Drinking Alcohol whether in small or not is not good for the health. The intoxication affects the brain. People who wants to have alcohol, say moderate drinking is good. That is moderate quantity induce sleep and hence one gets some good night sleep / rest. I had taken Alcohol and felt sleepy and that is all. Some time hang over also felt by me. It is one’s interest to consume (imagination / Utopian state) alcohol makes him to take a peg or two. These intentions lead him / make him to carve for Alcohol end up Alcoholic and a time never to return.

In many studies, moderate levels of alcohol intake have been shown to lower the risk of heart disease. According to Barbara Troy, Assistant Professor of Dietetics in the College of Health Sciences, “the health edge that’s most provocative right now is in relationship to cardiovascular disease.” She said, “alcohol has a favorable effect on lipid levels because it tends to elevate HDL, or ‘good’ cholesterol.” This puts a person at a lower risk of dying from heart disease, the leading cause of death in America. The benefits don’t stop there; other studies have shown that alcohol has a positive effect in reducing the risk of diseases ranging from gallstones to type II diabetes. Many of the benefits of red wine have been attributed to the phytochemicals, or plant chemicals, found in it. Some of these phytochemicals are thought to have antioxidant and even anti-cancer effects. A growing number of studies also show that regardless if a person drinks wine, beer, or spirits, the alcohol in itself contributes to improving health. But before you raise a glass to your health, it’s important to note that the benefits derived from alcohol come only from moderate intake. Most college students are well aware of the short-term consequences of drinking too much: loss of coordination, decreased inhibitions, debilitating hangovers. The long term risks, which include liver disease, weight gain, certain cancers, mental health problems, and even reduced fertility are even more serious.

Who told moderate drinking of alcohol is considered for good health? Do you know, alcohol in moderation may promote heart health and even ward off diabetes and dementia. Avid supporters of moderate drinking still warn about the dangers of alcohol, which is linked to breast cancer and other types of cancer. If the moderate drinking occurred on daily basis when consumed in large amounts, which will lead to your liver disease, heart damage, and strokes. According to Hindu culture, we should not consume alcohol. Even Christianity, most of the Indians are not consuming alcohol. But High society people are serving these drinks at the time of party/marriage etc. However, consuming of alcohol in any way is injurious to health. Beware of alcohol. If any of your friends offered frequently or occasionally simply avoid to take.

Hi The first study to show that moderate drinkers live longer than either teetotalers or heavy drinkers was published in 1923. But the jury is still out on whether moderate drinkers are simply healthier overall than non-drinkers, or if alcohol itself used in moderation does benefit health, Lee and colleagues note. They investigated the role of two risk factors associated with mortality that, to their knowledge, have not been studied together: functional disability and socioeconomic status (SES). They looked at 12,519 men and women, aged 55 and older, enrolled in the Health and Retirement Study. During four years of follow-up, 14% of the non-drinkers died, compared to 7% of moderate drinkers and 12% of people who consumed three or more drinks daily. According to Lee and colleagues, people who had a drink a day had a significantly higher socioeconomic status than non-drinkers, as measured by income, wealth, and years of education. For example, 37% of drinkers had a college education, compared to 14% of non-drinkers, and 52% of drinkers had $300,000 in assets, while 21% of non-drinkers did. After the researchers adjusted for traditional risk factors such as illness, smoking and obesity, the moderate drinkers were still 43% less likely to die during follow up. Once the researchers adjusted for SES and disability, the lower death risk for moderate drinkers compared to non-drinkers shrank to 28%. "The results significantly strengthen the evidence that moderate drinking leads to lower rates of overall mortality," the researchers write. But, they add, moderate drinkers could have yet more beneficial characteristics not examined in the study, and it's possible "that adjustment for these characteristics could fully explain the alcohol-mortality relationship."

I don't drink, for I just don't like to put my & other people's life at risk. The alcohol exaggerates your perceptions & slows your reflexes, besides loosening your inhibitions, so you tend to speak things without first thinking about the consequences. Having said that, the health benefits of alcohol are exaggerated too. "drinking alcohol "moderately" is considered good for health" is not true. It does not tell you the whole story. Alcohol dilates the blood vessels & capillaries. That makes you feel warm. But in cold season, when you get that feeling, one removes the clothing, & that leads to more heat loss from the body leading to effects of exposure to cold, which can sometimes be even fatal. Alcohol is very dehydrating. People who drink alcoholic drinks, like chilled beer to cool off in summer, they too get dehydrated severely at times. The headache & other effects you experience the tay after drinking, that is the "hangover" is also caused by the dehydration caused by the alcohol in your system. The heart benefits too are not honestly disclosed. For those who drink all the time, like the French & Italians, who have a couple of glasses of wine with each meal, they may have marginal benefits if they have been drinking a lot, by bringing it down to 1-2 glasses (4-6 ounces or 120-150 ml) of wile a day. For such people, giving up totally suddenly may lead to serious withdrawal, which is equally harmful for health. For people who don't drink at all, or for those who drink like me, occasionally, like may be 1-2 glasses of wine in a year or so, they do not stand to benefit from starting to drink alcohol. So, in a nutshell, if you drink a lot, you may have some benefit if you bring down the quantity to 1-2 drinks a day. If you don't drink at all, don't drink at all, don't start drinking thinking that you will benefit from it, for you will not.

Hi Yes true that it is a taboo in South India. In Middle classes and in Upper middle classes too it is not accepted to drink even socially. Due to modernisation and the increased level of salary many youngsters are falling for such habits and there is a big culture disasters going on. Even there is more science advancement and the education value is increased, drinking alcohol is considered as bad habit. It is good to drink a little. But it differs for the product taken. Red wine is good for health as it is taken from the apple juice which is undergone to fermentation. But it should be in less quantity as like medicine. As alcohol is not taken as the less quantity and would be an addictive if taken frequently it is better to avoid to fall for that social disease.

Hi.. I feel that it is entirely a matter of Individual thinking. People who grow up in an environment where it is freely available and popular, alcohol is just a normal thing for them. As for me, I grew up in a dry state where there is a total ban on alcohol. My experience says that this made my state very different from other states in culture. I have never seen people showing off in the name of alcohol or people lying drunk in parties or streets. I have never seen couples fighting due to alcohol problem of one of the spouses. I have never seen drunkards harassig normal public on roads. It surely gives a safer feeling to be in a dry state. Yes, it is said that it is good for health to have slight of alcohol after late 30s. It reduces the risk of heart attack (just what I hav heard people saying, dont know if thats true).. If a person is strong willed and has full control over his mind, alcohol cannot harm him in anyway. These addictions are indicative of weak minds, thats all!
