Query from: Joseph Jackson, Edison, New Jersey,USA, 10/02/06
Topic: COOKING      Submitted on: Ammas.com
Subject: Looking for LARGE IDLY MAKER

I love Idlys. I am looking for a idly maker with 4 to preferably 6 plates and each plate with 4 to prefereably 6 idlys. Also the idly size to be as LARGE as possible so that I can just make one time for the whole week. The idly size I am looking for preferably as large as possible so I can just eat one or two idlys at a time. Also I am looking to buy two sets of plates so one set could be steaming and another set is being setup. I just want to buy one time a good idly maker for a lifetime of usage so I am looking for a good quality stainless steel maker with no metal screws or parts which rusts after 3 months of usage. Any information where to buy this by mail order would be appreciated. I live in New Jersey.

I currently own SEVERAL small size Idly makers which when I use takes a long time for small teeny peeny idlys and they have screws and parts which are rusting. Every time I make I get just 12 small idlys so it takes a long time to make Idlys which could be stored and reheated for the whole week. I get harldy one day in 2 weeks or 3 weeks to spend time in kitchen to cook. Thanks in advance.

Hi! Usually my idlis are very soft and big. I have a 12 hole idli maker with 5 idli plate at the bottom and 7 idli at the top. whenever you go to India try to get one like that. This comes in Stainless steel with the bottom plate fits inside the outer vessel and the 7 idli hole fits at the top. It is always nice to used white cloth to make idli in this type of vessel. You get the real best idlis. Good Luck!

Hi,

You can buy non-stick idli plates. It will not rust. To buy online, please visit the following site:

http://www.hotdishes.com/idlycooker… http://www.perfectpeninsula.com/Idl… http://www.innoconcepts.com/idleez.…

Please note that steaming idli will take same time whether it is one big idli in a plate or four small idli in a plate. You will get one idli plate (big size and it is called "one plate idli" and the idli looks like a big appam). But the cooking time is same.

Hi,

Feel very happy to know that you also like idlis as much as we do. Since you wanted online links to buy the idli steamers, I went searching for you. If it is in chennai you would have had lots of varieties. In the net I found about 4/5/6 plates of idlis in a steamer/ cooker ie at a max. 24 idlis at a time. Is this enough for you? http://www.hotdishes.com/idlicooker… http://www.innoconcepts.com/idleez.… You can also see one idli chamber at the innooncepts site, which is being advertised for commercial purposes ,ie about 80/90 idlis at a time. You can buy that 6 plates set and make two batches of 24 idlis at a time. I think that should be enough for you. All the best

Hi joseph ,if u want very big idli maker(which r used for commercial hotel business in india)and more also then u have to order or get it from indian companies(custom made)or from the last three links below.here r the list of online sale of idli makers.if u r worrying about rust then why dont u try for the microwave idli maker.here r the limks try it. to prepare idli without idli stand if u have a pressure cooker a big one and a lunch box that also u can use it instead of the idli maker.put idli batter in the tiffin carrier and close it properly then put little water in the pressure cooker at the bottom and place this tiffin box in the pressure cooker then remove the presure button and bake the idli for 15 to 20 min, then remove,(but dont forget to remove the pressure button which is at the top of the cooker)(http://www.citychef.ca/xcart/custom…,this is the tiffin box)
