Subject: hair loss

Dear Amma, My hair has been falling for the past 1 year. I had so much hair that people use to appreciate it. My hair falls from the areas where my scalps hurts. I have a proper diet and health wise I'm perfectly fine. I can blame the hair loss on the straightner i had been using. I have tried a lot of things like coconut, castor and olive oil. I also tried pepper with lime seeds to control the hair loss but so far nothing has worked. in some areas the hair is growing but extremely thin. So much hair has fallen in the past that I had to cut my hair short. I would appreciate your help.

Baldness is a trait which involves the state of lacking hair where it often grows, especially on the head. The most common form of baldness is a progressive hair thinning condition called androgenic alopecia or 'male pattern baldness' that occurs in adult human males and some primate species. The severity and nature of baldness can vary greatly; it ranges from male and female pattern alopecia (androgenetic alopecia, also called androgenic alopecia or alopecia androgenetica), alopecia areata, which involves the loss of some of the hair from the head, and alopecia totalis, which involves the loss of all head hair, to the most extreme form, alopecia universalis, which involves the loss of all hair from the head and the body.

Hi Sania, Do not apply any thing contains chemical on your scalp and hair. When you apply oil , put your finger tips in oil and massage it on scalp. It will promote hair growth by increasing blood circulation to hair root areas.Try to make this oil. This is tested one. Remove the skin of about 15 Aloe vera leaves.Take the gel out and add it to one litre of coconut oil.Boil this mixture. Boil till the gel appears as sand like particles. Cool and strain. Use this oil.Apply this regularly to scalp and hair.No need to use any shampoo. When you wipe , your towel will absorb most of the oil from head. Use shampoo only once in a fortnight.

Dear sania,

Make a habbit: Massage the scalp for 10 to 15 minutes after bathing it with water. This stimulates the blood circulation and strengthens the hair follicles in the scalp.

Massage into the scalp and hair coconut milk or Aloe Vera gel. Leave it for ½ hour, then rinse with warm water. Repeat 3 times a week.

Massage into the scalp and hair honey with egg yolk. Leave for a 1/2 hour, then rinse.

Massage almond oil on scalp 2-3 times a day, daily. This will stop further hair loss.

Rinse hair with a mix of apple cider vinegar and sage tea to help hair grow

Scrub the bald portion with onions till it becomes red. Then applying honey.

sania ABID,

Here is what you can do to prevent hair fall

A high protein diet with plenty of fruits, green vegetables and dairy products is a must.

Drink 10-12 glass of water everyday.

Know your vitamins! IRON is important for healthy hair and brittle, limp hair indicates an iron deficiency. Spinach has a good iron content.

ZINC helps prevent hair loss and greying. Eat adequate zinc rich foods. Recipes containing stone ground, wholegrain flour are rich in zinc. A shortfall in VITAMIN B may cause dandruff, falling hair, loss of colour and could encourage grey hair. So B group Vitamins are essential for gloss, colour and thickness.

VITAMIN C ensures the health of capillaries supplying blood to hair follicles. Make sure your diet includes plenty of fresh fruits and veggies.

VITAMIN E encourages hair growth. Switch from refined flours to wholemeal and wheatgerm, eggs, vegetable oil.

COPPER stops hair from falling.Include small quantities of nuts, especially cashews and peanuts, seeds, whole milk and beans in your diet as these contain minute but important amounts of copper.

Brahmi amla oil also promotes hair growth.

Shampoo regularly. Remember, a CLEAN scalp is a HEALTHY SCALP.

Use a very mild shampoo and condition your hair at least twice a week. When you do, make sure you rinse out the conditioner thoroughly, otherwise residue build-up will cause your hair to look limp and dull.

Homemade remedies for preventing hair fall:

Apply almond oil on scalp and massage. Grind fenugreek seeds in water and apply on your scalp. Wash off after 40 minutes. Do this every morning for a month if it suits you.Remember, different treatments suit different types of hair.

Massage warm castor oil + almond oil into your scalp gently. Wrap a hot towel around your scalp so it gets absorbed into the hair. Do this twice a week for healthy, shiny hair.

Add 2-3 drops of honey to a glass of water and use this as the last rinse after shampooing.

Quick Hair Care Conditioner

Mix 1 egg, 2 tbs castor oil, 1 tsp vinegar and 1 tsp glycerine. Beat until frothy and massage lightly into your scalp. Wrap your head in a hot towel, steam, then wash off. This conditioner makes hair thicker, shiny, soft and manageable. Honey Conditioner

Beat 1-2 eggs (depending on the length of the hair), 1 tsp honey and 2 tsp olive oil. Massage gently into the scalp. Steam, and shampoo after an hour.

Below are some tips that can help stop hair loss and keep your existing hair look healthy and great:

Massage the scalp daily with finger tips (not the nails) to stimulate and promote circulation to the scalp. It is essential not to scrub while washing hair. It is better to ‘milk’ the hair from the hair backwards in the same direction. This will give a shiny look to the hair.

Comb or brush your hair and scalp gently with about 50-100 strokes in the morning and at night. This helps break up hardened oil (sebum) that has clogged hair follicles. Doing this alone has enhanced the growth of new hair. Combing or brushing has to be in one direction only, which is from the hair root to tip.

While using blow dryers, always keep the heat a good distance from the scalp and hair. Avoid heating the scalp and hair excessively.

Avoid applying hair creams, lotions, styling gels and sprays directly on to the scalp as this will clog up the hair follicles.

Cucumber for hair growth : Drinking a mixture of cucumber juice and that of carrot regularly stimulates hair growth. The high content of silicon and sulphur in cucumber juice nourishes the hair, nails and skin.

While it is difficult to avoid exposure of the hair and scalp to the wind and sun, over exposure is best avoided and perhaps a cap could be used. However, tight hats and caps contribute to poor circulation, depriving the hair of proper nutrition.

Sweat, dirt and grime around the rim inhibit follicle health and contribute to build up. Extreme hair loss and thinning could also be the side effects of a medical condition or medication and it helps to consult a dermatologist.

Stress factors lead to fluctuating hormone levels, which in turn cause excessive oil secretion (sebum) resulting in hair loss. Stress can be dealt with in many ways, most notably through exercise, adequate sleep, healthy diet and techniques like relaxation, exercises, deep breathing and yoga.

It is necessary to avoid “crash and fad” diets. Proper nutritious meals along with vitamin and mineral supplements are key factors for healthy hair and skin.

Follow these tips to avoid hair loss and also help your hair look great and shiny that you would want to flaunt it.

Sania,

The cause of your hair loss is more due to some hormonal or health reason. Oil remedies, etc are all good if there is a problem with scalp or roots problem. But your hairloss could be due to a sideeffect of some underlying problem, like Iron deficiency in your blood, medication that you might be on for someother ailment, Water used to bathe and drink. Best step forward is to meet your doctor and get some vital checkups done on your body and the water used to bathe and drink. This can give some leads for the causes of the problem. Then we could explore remedies.

Hair in normal and healthy conditions does not fall out at an alarming rate. The excess fall out occurs mostly when the hair condition is extremely dry, rough and damaged. Conditioning and nourishing of hair are the top priorities to prevent excess hair loss. Cream rinses help the dry and rough hair to regain its flexibility. Generous application of moisturisers and oil preparations replenish the moisture and oil in the dry hair.

Massage is a very important element of the scalp treatment to control excess fall out of hair. It invigorates the blood circulation, giving hair an increased supply of nutrition and oxygen for healthy growth. Massage also stimulates the dormant hair follicles to grow fresh hair.

Try these age-old treatments. The Hair Rejuvenating Ointment Powder 10 gms each of lime seeds and black pepper. Make a fine paste in plain water or if possible in ginger juice. Apply this paste on the head every night. Leave it on for at least a couple of hours. Then rinse it out. Massage your scalp with your finger tips for five minutes while applying the paste. (Note: Application of the above paste may irritate your scalp. If you have sensitive skin, reduce the quantity of the ingredients.)
