Usually idols of planets are never worshiped at homes. Recently, a lot of people are commercializing the aspect of Navagraha temples in Tamil Nadu by conducting package tours and whatnot that have resulted in a mass confusion over the exact nature of the Navagrahas. The temple of Guru Bhagavan is at Alangudi near Kumbhakonam. Here the idol is of Dakshinamurthy, facing south, preaching to the seven holy sages. It should however be noted that this idol is not rare and is found in almost all of Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu like Tanjore, Chidambaram, SriKalahasthi (AP) etc. But what makes the idol at Alangudi special is that Guru responds to the worship performed at this shrine. Essentially, the deity is as such Shiva and can be worshipped by anyone. In fact, worship of Dakshinamurthy is specified in the Sastras for the Brahmacharis and those in quest for knowledge. But if you see the idol of Guru in any Navagraha temple, it is of a crowned, four-armed male, riding a elephant and facing NORTH. It is quite a paradox that Dakshinamurthy and Guru face opposite diretions. So, if you have a picture or idol of Dakshinamurthy, make sure it has the following characteristics: Sitting, usually beneath a Pipal tree. surrounded by seven or four sages. and Dakshinamurthy doesn't wear a crown. If it is a idol of a male four-armed figure riding a elephant, it is best that you donate the idol after worshipping for maximum of 21 days. Indian tradition accords a special reverence to the Guru or the teacher. Dakshinamurthy, in the Saivite system of beliefs is regarded as the ultimate Guru - the embodiment of knowledge and the destroyer of ignorance (as represented by the demon being crushed under the feet of the deity). The Jnana Mudra is interpreted in this way:- The thumb denotes the God and the index finger denotes the man. The other three fingers stand for the three congenital impurities of man viz. arrogance, illusion and bad deeds of the past births. When man detaches himself from these impurities, he reaches God. The Abhaya Mudra, a gesture with the hand lifted above thigh with palm facing out, fingers pointing, is interpreted as His grace upon His students. The rosary or the snake signifies Tantric knowledge. The fire represents illumination, removing the darkness of ignorance.

4. Impact on Indian Life The fifth day of the week, Thursday is associated with the planet Jupiter and is referred to as Guruvar (or Guruvaaram). Thursdays are considered auspicious to start any educational endeavours. It is on Thursdays that special worship services are offered to Dakshinamurthy in many Saivite temples. Some temple traditions hold full moon nights, particularly the night of the Guru Poornima as the appropriate time for worship services to Dakshinamurthy.

Even though the idol of Dakshinamurthy is installed in every Shiva temple, there are only a few temples where Dakshinamurthy is the chief deity. Only one of the twelve Jyotirlingas is Dakshinmurthy, The Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain. Being the only Dakshinmurthy Jyotirlinga, It holds special importance for Shaivites as a site of learning. Other notable temples are the Vaikom Mahadevar temple in Kerala, where the deity enshrined in the form of a Shivalingam is considered as Dakshinamurthy, and Alangudi (Kumbakonam) in Tamil Nadu. In the Sivanandeswarar temple in Thirupanthurai, (Tanjore) Tamil Nadu, He is depicted in the Ardhanari form. In Thirupulivanam, we can find Dakshinamurthy in the form of Ardhanariswara. This temple is on the Uthiramerur-Kanchipuram road, 5 km from Uthiramerur, near Chennai. In March 2007, a big temple of Lord Dakshinamurty (the first in Maharashtra) was created in the Shrutisagar Ashram, about 30 km from Pune.

u can keep dakshinamurthy idol or statue at home.

Hi, Yes, Picture of lord Dakshinamurthy photo can be kept and worshipped in home. The direction of the placement should be south only(hang on south facing wall).Idol can also be worshipped, but you need to perform daily pooja-rudra abhishekam. Also do offer the garland of channa dal on every thursdays and recite dakshina murthy shlokas, specially dakshinamurthy varnamaalaasthaka. This will help to attain knowledge. If desired to keep idol, the size should be of one's thumb.

Yes, you can definitely keep the Picture of Dakshinamurthy and sing Dakshinamurthy ashtakam on thursdays.

But you are not supposed to have pictures of any of 9 Navagrahas in pooja ghar in your house.

Absolutely. Lord Dakshinamoorthy is the Guru of the Devas, but he is also the form of Lord Shiva. Just make sure that he faces South, unlike other Gods who must face North or East.l That is because he is "Mrityunjaya", conquerer of death. And South is the direction of Yama, the God of Death.

Lord Dakshinamurthy represents GURU as in GURUKUL and not GURU as in planets. Since Dakshinamurthy is a 'GURU' a teacher, he is worshipped on Thursdays since 'GURU' planet is the GURU of Devas. As such there is no bar in keeping an idol/picture of Lord Dakshinamurthy at home and worship.
