Karthik masa (Kartik month) is the most auspicious month amongst all Hindu months. According to Hindus, worshipping of God during this month fetches the Moksha (salvation). Hence, devotees worship God and perform various rituals and customs very strictly.
Karthika Puranam details the rituals and customs to be performed during the month of Karthik. Various Hindu sacred texts have mentioned the list of basic rituals and customs of Kartika masam.
Rituals and Customs – During Karthika Masam :
Devotees should not eat non vegetarian food for whole month of Karthik. Eating non vegetarian food is considered as ‘Brahma Hathya’ (Killing Lord Brahma). For the whole month, devotees take meal only once a day. They will have breakfast at nights. If devotees are not able to do so, they follow this rituals at least on auspicious days like Karthik Monday, karthika Pournami etc. Devotees take ceremonial or spiritual bath everyday for the whole month. Devotees light diya every evening and perform Karthika masa puja. Devotees recite atleast one chapter of Karthika Puranam everyday. Karthika Masa Vratham
Karthika masam starts on the day after deepavali and ends after 30 days.
Here i am giving the basic rituals we should follow for this month. You can find the detailed vratha vidhanam in karthika puranam book.
1) One should not eat non veg food for the whole month.
2) Must take meal only once per day for the 30 days, we can eat breakfast at nights or atleast we must follow this on auspicious days like mondays, karthika poornima, koti somavaram etc.
3) Must take shower(including hair) daily.
4) Must light deepam every evening and do pooja.

It is even good to hear the story if someone is reading it loud

Hi Raghu, I don't think you would be able to download the books free of cost. Amazon.com is a good site wherein you can find variety of books. But you need to pay it through your credit card. It is online shopping. Or else you could check in some other sites for downloads. It will be available in PDF forms.
