on thursday u can eat anything u want . on friday before vratam u don;t eat anything .if u are doing first time better not to eat anything till evening. u can take fruits and milk if u want . in evening after u have done pooja ,u can eat any vegetarian diet u want .
The rituals of worship during the Varalakshmi Vratam differ from region to region in south India, but they all have the same basic format. The performer begins the day with a holy purification bath, and wears clean clothes. The arena is decorated with kolam (rangoli). A geometrical design known as mandalam is then drawn on the clean surface of the floor (with the picture of a lotus upon it). A sacred pot (kalasham) is filled with pure water and rice (akshata), topped with a bunch fresh mango leaves, and a coconut (unbroken, with its kudimi on) smeared with turmeric powder is placed atop. Also, sandal paste and kumkumam are applied to the kalasham, and a cloth is tied around it before placing it on the mandalam. Some people further beautify the kalasham with a picture of Varalakshmi drawn on it and decorated with jewels. Then, Goddess Lakshmi is invoked. Fresh flowers and grains are used in the worship, indicating growth and prosperity.
After performing the initial worship of Lord Ganesha (seeking removal all obstacles), prayers are offered to the kalasham. A toram (which consists of nine threads and nine knots) is tied to the Goddess. Then they worship the thread (raksha). Now the main worship of Lakshmi begins, with a second worship of the sacred Thread. Finally, it is tied around the right hand of the performer. Prayers in the form of Lakshmi Ashtottara shatanAma and sahasranAma are then chanted. Another sumangali is then chosen, and she is offered auspicious articles as gifts and food. The function concludes with the singing of several hymns and songs in praise of Varalakshmi. u can read lakshimi astotharam, maha lakshmi astakam, lalitha sahasranaamam, and any other lakshmi songs if u want.

Hi,
On thursday you can eat your regular food. On the day when you perform Varalakshmi Vratam don't eat anything (breakfast) in the morning before doing Puja. You can prepare the Naivedyam items and perform Puja in the morning. In the evening you can invite some ladies and give them Tamboolam.
Varalakshmi Puja or Varalakshmi Vratha is an important ritual observed by married women in South India and Maharashtra for the prosperity and welfare of their families. Varalakshmi Puja falls on a Friday in the month of August and the preparations for the puja begin on Thursday. All the necessary items needed for the pooja are collected by Thursday evening.
People wake up early in the morning on Friday and take a bath. Traditionally speaking the waking up time for the puja is the brahma muhurtham. Then the designated puja area and house is cleaned well and a beautiful ‘kolam’ or rangoli is drawn on the intended place of puja.
Next is the preparation of the ‘kalasham or kalash.’ A bronze or silver pot is selected and is cleaned thoroughly and a swastika symbol is drawn and is smeared with sandalwood paste. The kalasham pot is filled with raw rice or water, coins, a single whole lime, five different kinds of leaves, and beetle nut. The items used to fill the kalasham vary from region to region.
The kalasham up to the neck is sometimes covered with a cloth and mango leaves are placed on the mouth of the kalasham. Finally, a coconut smeared with turmeric is used to close the mouth of the kalasham. To this coconut, an image of Goddess Lakshmi is fixed or the image of Lakshmi is drawn using turmeric powder. Now the kalasham symbolically represents Goddess Lakshmi.
The kalasham is usually placed on a bed of rice. First Lord Ganesha is worshipped. Then begins the Varalakshmi Puja. The puja consists of singing slokas dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi like the Lakshmi Sahasranamam. Arati is performed on the kalasham.
Different types of sweets are offered. Some people offer pongal. In some areas women tie yellow thread on their hands.
The woman who is observing the Varalakshmi Puja abstains from eating certain kind of food and this varies from region to region.
Thamboolam is offered to women in the locality and in the evening an arati is offered.
The next day, that is on Saturday, after taking a bath the kalasham is dismantled and the water in the kalasham is sprinkled in the house. If rice is used then it is mixed with rice in the house.
There are no hard and fast rules in performing the Varalakshmi Puja and you can be flexible on the puja items. Even a simple prayer will please Goddess Lakshmi.
You can prepare some of these items for Naivedyam : Paramanam, Tamarind Rice,Chakrapongali, Venn Pongal, Poornam boorelu, daddojanam(Yogurt rice),bobbatlu, kobbari burfi, puris made with maida, chitti garelu (miniature adais) etc.
LORD SHIVA describes the glory of this Vrata in the Skanda Purana. It is performed by a woman whose husband is still living. Maha Lakshmi is the abode of all auspiciousness and prosperity. This worship of Maha Lakshmi is done to obtain good progeny, and for the health and long life of the husband. The Vrata is observed on the Friday immediately preceding the full moon day of the month of Sravan (August-September). After a purificatory bath, the lady should put on a clean, fresh cloth and make a mandala with the drawing of a lotus upon it. A kalasha filled with rice and topped with fresh mango leaves, a coconut and cloth are placed on the mandala and Lakshmi is invoked therein. Fresh grains are used in the worship as they convey the idea of growth and prosperity. After the worship of the kalasha, follows the worship of Ganesha, then the worship of the raksha or the sacred thread. Now the main worship of Vara Lakshmi begins and the raksha is worshipped a second time. It is then tied to the right hand of the lady. After the worship various auspicious articles are given as charity to some deserving lady whose husband is alive. This lady is also fed with dainties. Lakshmi not only bestows wealth and all sorts of material prosperity, but also imparts divine wisdom to all Her devotees. She is Vidya Shakti. She introduces Her devotees to Her Lord. She recommends them to Her Lord for their salvation.
MOTHER LAKSHMI The Giver of Prosperity and Happiness She is the power of Lord Narayana who is also known as Lord Vishnu or Lord Hari. Narayana is God’s aspect of preservation. He is an embodiment of Shuddha Sattwa. Lakshmi is His causal body. She is Maya, the illusory power of Nature. She deludes the whole world by Her veiling power and projects it through Her projecting power. She Herself as Vidya-Lakshmi enlightens the spiritual aspirant. Beauty, grace, a picturesque scenery or charming landscape, modesty, love, prosperity, music, the five elements and their combinations, the internal organs, mind, Prana, intellect—all these are Her manifestations.Without Lakshmi even Sannyasins cannot do propaganda or preaching work or run their institutions. They are in fact more in need of Lakshmi than the householders because they have to do great dynamic work for human weal. Sri Shankara worshipped Devi, Lakshmi and Saraswathi for success in his work. All great prophets and divine messengers who have done great spiritual work in the past were devotees of Mother Lakshmi, Devi and Saraswathi.
The glory of performing the VARALAKSHMI VRATAM, narrated directly by Lord Shiva Himself, is elaborately discussed in the Skanda Puranam. This is a festival to propitiate Shri Varalakshmi (Mahalakshmi ) - the consort of Lord Vishnu, who is the abode of all mangalam (auspiciousness) , prosperity and wealth. The Varalakshmi Vratam is to be performed on the shrAvaNa shukla shukra vAram , that is, the Friday immediately following the full moon day (Purnima) in the auspicious month of Shravanam (corresponding to August - September). This Vratam is undertaken by the sumangalis (whose husbands are still living) for good progeny, good health, and wishing long life for the husbands.
Lakshmi is symbolic of eight forces - wealth (shrI), earth (bhU), learning (sarasvati), love (prIti), fame (kIrti), peace (shAnti), pleasure (tuShTi), and strength (puShTi). Each of these forces is called a Lakshmi, and collectively they are known as ashTa lakshmi. Worship of Varalakshmi is rendered equivalent to the pUja for ashTalakshmi. Since She is ever ready to grant boons to her true devotees, she is usually referred to as "vara lakshmi".
May Goddess Lakshmi bless you all! Let us repeat Her Mantra: Om mahaadevyai cha vidmahe; Vishnu patnyai cha dheemahi Tanno lakshmi prachodayat.

The woman who is observing the Varalakshmi Puja abstains from eating certain kind of food and this varies from region to region. You have to observe fasting, and the fasting diet, normally what we do in all vratha fasting on the fasting day the day starts from 12 o clock at midnight and close the day at 12 o clock the next day night.

Preparation for Varalakshmi Vratham
Ancient texts say that who perform the puja have to observe fast on the eve of Varalakshmi Vratam. On the day of Puja, they should get up early during Brahma Kalam and take a bath. The house hold should be cleaned and the entrances smeared with turmeric powder and the kum kum marks applied. A small Mandapam is set up by drawing a rangoli. Rice is spread on the rangoli and a kalasa is placed on the rice. The kalasa comprises a small pot on which is placed a coconut. Atop the coconut, a cloth is placed like cap. The features of the Goddess are also drawn on the coconut to make the image of Her to facilitate worship. Lord Ganesh is worshipped first which is the usual practice before any puja or ritual and then, the main puja of Varalakshmi Vratam is performed. According to legend, a brahmin woman Charumathi, an ideal housewife serving her in laws and husband dutifully has a dream in which Goddess Mahalakshmi appears and asks her to perform puja to Varalakshmi. She, therefore, organizes the puja and invites her friends and relatives to the puja, after which Charumathi as well as all those who attend were bestowed wealth.

hi there are no strict rules for varalaxmi vratam, just avoid garlic onion if you are a non vegetarian don't eat non veg as long as you keep kalasam at home, there is no need to follow any fasting on thursday, if you are from tamilnadu, then place kalasam with godess on thursday evening andlight lamp make payasam and offer other wise you can keep kalasam on friday and decorate that place and do pooja as you have book or CD and offer prasadam, 5 varieties or 9 varieites includes some yellow rice and fried stuff
You can eat pretty much anything that is vegetarian on Thursdays. Avoid bitter things if you (lemon, citrus, tamarind, mango, etc.) can. On Fridays, it's strictly no bitter things and no non-vegetarian stuff. Also, it will be good if your family members also avoided bitter food on Friday.
Thre is no restrictions for eatables on thursday.Restrictions are on Friday. You should be on fast till the completion of the vratam. There is no restrictions on taking liquid foods till the completion of puja. After the puja you can take the prasadam as food for the day. NV is fully restricted on the day

One way of performing Vratam is to chant Mahalaxmi Shloka / Mantra. Its like this :
Aum Mahalaxmeyacha vidmahe Ashtalaxmi cha dhimahi, tanno danti prachodayat.
You may chant it for 108 times a day. TRy to do it preferably on every Friday either in the early morning or in the evening, immediately after the sunset, at the time of lighting.
