wheat germ is godhuma ravva in telugu.and u can call gehu ka ravva in hindi i think.u can prepare upma with it.

The germ is the most nutritious portion of the wheat kernel and makes up only about 2 1/2% of its weight. It has a nutty flavor and is very oily, which causes it to turn rancid quickly. Wheat germ is the reproductive area or embryo from which the seed germinates to form the sprout that becomes the green wheat grass. The term "germ" comes from the word germinate, and does not refer to "germs" such as bacteria and viruses. Wheat germ is usually separated from the bran and starch during the milling of flour because the germ's perishable oil content limits the keeping time of the flour. Wheat germ contains very little of the sticky gluten protein to which many with wheat allergy react. Wheat germ oil, an extraction of the germ, is strongly flavored and expensive.

Walk past any health food store and you will no doubt see advertisements for wheat germ. Wheat germ is one of the most nutritional products available. In fact, wheat germ contains 23 nutrients, and has more nutrients per ounce than any other vegetable or grain.

Wheat germ is a part of the wheat kernel. The germ is only a very small part of the kernel, approximately 2 ½ percent in total. The word germ does not have anything to do with bacteria; it simply refers to germination. The germ is the reproductive part that germinates and forms the wheat grass.

Wheat Germ always has provided an impressive bundle of nutrients including vitamin E, folate, phosphorus, thiamin, zinc and magnesium.

Wheat germ contains naturally occurring polyunsaturated fat. A two-tablespoon serving of original toasted wheat germ contains 50 calories and 1 gram of fat; a 1-2/3 tablespoon serving of honey crunch wheat germ contains 50 calories and 1 gram of fat.

Storing Wheat Germ Because of its high oil content, improperly stored wheat germ can become rancid. So store it in sealed glass jars and keep it refrigerated. Find other, prepackaged wheat products in most natural foods and grocery stores; buy in bulk for maximum savings.

Wheat Germ Oil There are no extra health benefits to wheat germ oil, as far as we know. But there is nothing in wheat germ oil that is likely to cause you any harm. In general, wheat germ oil contains fat, a white alcohol called octacosanol, and vitamin E as well as other vitamins and minerals.

In the 1960's, based on studies conducted in the US and Russia, wheat germ oil was touted as improving endurance, reaction times, stamina, and vigor. However, there has been considerable criticism about how these studies were conducted and the way the findings were interpreted. Also, the active ingredients that were supposed to cause the beneficial effects could not be identified. Some said it was the vitamin E; others pointed to the octacosanol as the source.

Eventually, the Federal Trade Commission analyzed many of the published studies and concluded that wheat germ oil did not have special fitness, athletic or health enhancing qualities. Advertisements saying wheat germ oil did have such attributes have since been banned.

Wheat germ has been found to be very beneficial in order to keep the body in tip top condition. It is used by athletes in their diet to improve cardiovascular function and improve endurance levels. Body builders will also add wheat germ to their diets in order to bulk up and maintain the nutritional levels they need to perform.

You can buy wheat germ from all good health stores and many supermarkets will carry it as well. It can either be purchased in toasted or fresh form. There are also many food products that already contain wheat germ. A number of cereals are made with it, as well as bread and flour.

If you make your own bread or cakes you can easily add wheat germ when baking by using it instead of a small amount of flour. You will find that it has a sweet, almost nutty flavor that is not too overpowering. It can also be added to meat dishes, eggs, vegetables and even yogurt.

It can be added to casseroles, muffins, pancakes, cereals etc.

Wheat germ is truly a super food; it is high in nutrients since it is the embryo of the wheat grain and its job is to nourish the growing plant. So it makes sense that this embryonic "germ" is only about two to three percent of the entire wheat kernel, but contains 23 nutrients! Sadly though, wheat germ is considered a waste product and is discarded after wheat is milled into white flour. Just add that onto the list of reasons why I am not so fond of white flour. Once the germ is removed, the wheat kernel is just starch. How nutritionally lonely.

An ounce of wheat germ contains four grams of fiber and eight grams of protein. It is high in iron, potassium and vitamins B1 and B3, as well as vitamin E. Wheat germ is also high in the minerals in magnesium and zinc.

You can find toasted wheat germ or raw wheat germ at health food stores, in the bulk bins of grocery stores, or online. It has a delicate, nutty, slightly sweet flavor and is often used as an ingredient in cereals. You can substitute a 1/2 cup of regular flour with wheat germ when baking. It is also great sprinkled over yogurt with fruit in the morning, but don't limit your germ to just baked goods. You can try it in a casserole or meatloaf or use wheat germ as a substitute for bread crumbs.

u can eat a small amount of it with a little sugar and milk (like a cereal) for a tasty treat.

Latin Name : Triticum sativum English Names : Common Wheat, Bread Wheat Sanskrit / Indian Name : Godhuma, Kumari

Triticum sativumAn annual grass. Wheat is a good source of mineral nutrients.

It contains significant amounts of iron, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc; iodine and cobalt are present in trace amounts. Whole wheat is a good source of thiamin and nicotinic acid. Wheat is a rich source of tocopherols with high vitamin-E potency that nourishes and prevents loss of moisture from the skin. The oil is used to tone and soften the lips and has a potent antioxidant activity. This protect the skin from scavenging free-radicals, prevents premature aging and reduces ultra violet rays induced damage. It helps in proper drainage of secretions from the sebaceous and other glands of the skin and thereby helps in preventing black heads.

Wheat germ is reported to contain small quantities of ergosterol and dihydroergosterol. Starch is the principal carbohydrate of wheat; glucose and fructose are present in small amounts. Wheat germ contains hemagglutinating and antitryptic factors. These are destroyed by toasting and autoclaving. The germ also contains three hemoproteins, all possessing peroxidase activity. Cytochrome C has been isolated in crystalline form in a yield of 2mg. per kilogram germ. A nontoxic and anti-esinophilic protein is reported to be present in wheat germ.

Used in Anti-Wrinkle Cream, Face Moisturizing Lotion, Gentle Exfoliating Walnut Scrub, Lip Balm, Protein Shampoo for normal hair, Revitalizing Night Cream, Soothing Body Lotion for normal skin, Regurin.

http://recipes.howstuffworks.com/na…

Natural Weight - Loss Food : Wheat Germ

When you cut back on saturated fat, you almost certainly cut back on the amount of meat you eat. When this happens, you may also be cutting back on important nutrients, too. Filling the void, though, is fat-fighting wheat germ. It provides a bevy of minerals, including all-important iron and zinc.

Wheat germ, a health-food basic, is the embryo of the wheat kernel. It is one portion of the wheat kernel that is removed when it is processed into refined flour. Wheat germ certainly deserves its reputation for being a powerhouse of nutrients, as its profile strikingly illustrates.

Health Benefits :

Wheat Germ is one of the best sources of folic acid. That's good news, since it's recommended that all women of childbearing age get sufficient amounts of this nutrient to prevent neural-tube birth defects. Folic acid reduces a compound in your body called homocysteine. Lower levels of homocysteine have been linked to reducing the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis bone fractures, and dementia.

Wheat germ also contains a phytonutrient called L-ergothioneine, which is a powerful antioxidant that is not destroyed by cooking. The fiber boost you get from wheat germ is phenomenal.

Selection and Storage

Because of its unsaturated fat content, wheat germ goes rancid easily, especially if it's raw. Fresh wheat germ should smell something like toasted nuts, not musty. Unopened, a sealed jar of wheat germ will keep about one year on the shelf. Always store opened wheat germ in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed container, where it'll keep up to nine months.

Preparation and Serving Tips

Wheat germ makes a nutritious and often undetectable addition to a myriad of dishes, including breads, pancakes, waffles, cookies, cereals, and milk shakes. It's a lower-fat alternative to granola that can be added to yogurt and cereals.

When adding wheat germ to baked goods or quick breads, you can replace one half to one cup of the flour with it. Because wheat germ tends to absorb moisture, you may want to add one to two tablespoons of water for every one-quarter cup of wheat germ you add to a recipe.

As you work on your weight-loss plan to cut back on fatty meat dishes, remember that wheat germ can provide you with those vitamins and minerals you may be missing, as well as give you fiber to satisfy your appetite.

The germ is the part of the wheat that is usually removed in order to process wheat to make maida or white flour. If you eat chapatis made with atta or anything made with dalia (cracked wheat) you are already eating wheat germ as it is an essential part of the whole wheat. Wheat germ is harder to find in India although it may be available at supermarkets. I don't think there is any common name for it in an Indian language it is generally known as wheat germ. You do not cook it but rather sprinkle it into lassi, smoothies, salads, cereals, and baked goods to add extra nutrition and fiber. But if you're eating whole wheat foods anyway as mentioned above you need not worry about adding extra germ as you are getting these nutrients.
