1. So u are doing a vrat but wish to know whether u can eat a ripe banana ( because u would like to) .
2.Pl. see what Bhagvan has advised in the Gita regarding such instances. Where one forcibily controls the external needs when the inner urge is still there:
Bhagvad Gita ( 3:6)
“ He who controlling the senses organs but always experiencing /achieving /thinking with his mind of the same is a fool . He is said to be a false character)”
[Karmae-indriyani samyamya ya aasthae mansaa smaranIndriya-arthaan- vimoodhathma mithya-aachaara sa uchyathae]
3. What this means is that " IT IS THE MIND THAT IS WHAT MATTERS.. . . . . .. ." . .
Sri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa has explained the 1st sloka of the Gita cited above with two stories:
a)A young woman trying to cross a river was carried by a Buddha Bhikshu to the other shore.
Later, his companion, an older Sanyasi complained to the Master that his companion had carried a woman in his arms.
The Bhikshu when asked, said that it was true but had forgotten all about it & therefore had not mentioned it to the master.
The master said to the other Bhikshu : , “He left her on the shore, u are still carrying her in your mind”
b) When a sanyasi and his neighbour, a courtesan died , the Sanyasi went to hell and the courtesan to heaven. “There is some mistake “ said the Sanyasi.
The administer of Hell said “NO, her mind was always filled with u wondering at the purity of a Sanyasi’s mind; the God that u sang about and spoke about . Whereas ur mind was full of her and what she was doing. . .”
4. Also, if u feel that Santoshi maa has not said this :
“(If) He, with great deep interest (and )full involvement seeks his goal , (he ) fulfills those desires thru those very devas whom he meditates upon. However only as decided by me ” ( Gita 7:22)
“If it is with great devotion and a clean mind that (even ) a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water , is offered, I receive that devotee’s offerings with much happiness” (Bhagvad Gita :9:26)
7. One of the names of lalita (680th) in the Lalita Sahasra nama is "Sukha-aradhya" . . .meaning "the one who can be worshipped with ease. . "
8. Vrats , poojas, mantra are from the Karma kandha of the Vedas. The Gita is said to the be Milk of the Upanishad cow .The upanishads are from the Jnana Khanda of the Vedas. One does not contradict the other.
9. Also, Vedic mantras and poojas are extremely difficult to perform ;That’s why results of poojas and homas are almost never felt manifested . where as if performed perfectly it is 100% guaranteed that the result will be obtainable. Mundokapanishad .( 1-2-3) potrays this thru what it says about failure of Agni-hotram . Roughly translated this would mean :
“ If it is not accompanied by a). new moonand full moonsacrifices
b) 4 months of autumnal sacrifice(chaturmasya) .
c) sacrifice of offereing first fruits at harvest time
d) if not attended by guests,
e) performed without woshipping of viswadevasf) not performed as per rules laid down in Vedas. . .
. . . .then it will not only not help him , but also destroy him for 7 generations”
9. Any way it s best not to go too much after the external rituals.
Only try to remember that a vrat / pooja is an offering to God and offer it how u would offer to someone whom u love most.. . and that is: "sincerely"
10. Also Shankar -Acharya who is the one who has precribed pooja vidhi for many many temples inIndia has written this too ( Bhavani Ashtakam)
. . .it should be a great solace for people who do not know poojas and mantras.
"To give in offering
I know not;
Or to sit in meditation .
I know not the tantras;
Or the mantras;
Not a pooja, Or a mudra;
U Mother! Are my refuge , My only Refuge "
[ Na Janaami Dhanam, Na cha dhyana yogam, Na janami thathram, na cha sthothra manthram, Na janami poojam, na cha nyasa yogam, Gathisthwam, Gathisthwam thwam ekaa Bhavani ]
11. Use ur mind filled with purity and goodness and u will get ur own answers for all these lesser details. Remember with Draupadi , Krishna was satisfied with a piece of leaf sticking in the container after everyone had had their food. Without Bhakti nothing helps. And with Bhakti nothing more to it. 12. Also , if u ve found this answer useful u can open
and try reading 2 word documents. . .1)Knowing the unknown, and 2) A pooja every minute .
Both are free down loads.
There would be some overlap with this answer. . But it would help to give some insight about Santoshi maa / Lalita. .. the Unknown . .& th e unknowable. .
Also on the same page on the side pane would be a link to Audio and meanings of "Bhavani ashtakam" . It is a very small stotra and the music is extremely delightful to the ear. Especially if u know what is being said.
yes u can eat ripe banana on that vrat day and can put that as prasad also.only sour items should not be eaten or put as prasad.sour items like lemons, curds, tamarind,oranges,pineapple,jackfruit,salt etc should not be taken .
This vrat is very tough. You have to be very careful. Women observe a fast and take their meals in the evening. They include some white food like milk or kheer in their meals.
Fridays in the month of Shravan are especially auspicious. Goddess Durga is worshipped and offered a naivedyam of sweets. A Brahmin and a married woman are invited for meals. The married woman is given haldi-kumkum , milk, sugar and roasted gram.You cannot have imli, curd, lemon. It is so believed that fasting and praying for her for 16 consecutive Fridays brings peace and prosperity in ones family. She is also considered to be an incarnation of Mother Durga and is widely worshipped through out India and rest of the world. You should fast on the night i.e you can have some light tiffin with out any sour item
Keep channa (soaked in water for 6 hours in water) or puffed bengal gram along with jaggery piece and bananas as prasadam.
The only other stricture is that the performer of the vrat should eat but one meal during the day and should not eat, or serve to anyone else, sour or bitter foods. When one's wish has been granted, one is required to serve a festive meal-which should likewise not include any sour dishes-to eight boys; this ceremony of thanksgiving, common to many vrats, is known as udyapan or "bringing to conclusion." The vrat story to be recited or heard as part of the ritual .
Dear Lopamudra, Maa Santoshi is an emblem of love, contentment, forgiveness, happiness and hope. It is so believed that fasting and praying for her for 16 consecutive Fridays brings peace and prosperity in ones family.
Doing the Santoshi Mata vrat is something you have to ensure you complete and not leave undone. The things you require to do this vrat are: 1 coconut (you must use this same coconut for all the fridays and then give it in the temple on the day you are doing the udyaapan), gud and channa, a lamp to light the diya (ghee only), green bananas, flowers, dhoop, incense sticks, a copper vessel to hold water, Santoshi Mata vrat katha book, haldi, kumkum, a photo of Santoshi Mata.. Duration: This vrat needs to be done on a Friday, the duration can continue for 16 or 32 fridays. Vidhi: To start your vrat you will begin on a friday, Ideally best done before noon, say the Santoshi Mata katha in front of the ghee lamp if there is no one to listen to the story, One needs to fast for the whole day or incase of sickness can have one meal (without onions, garic, tomato or any other sour flavoring) It can be taken during lunch after doing a 'bhog' for Santoshi Mata. One needs to ensure not to touch any sour things on this day. This is because Santoshi Mata is believed to sit under a milk fall and incase the 'bhakt' touches any sour thing, they not only 'bhrasht' the vrat but as Ma takes her bhakt close to her, it is believed that we also contaminate Mata's abode.. The next day after the vrat, the bhakt will first thing eat gud and channa to close the vrat and then eat as normal. Water can be had and some people also believe in having milk without sugar. The water which is in the copper vessel can be sprinkled around the house after prayers and the remaining can be put in a tulsi plant. If you do not have tulsi plant, you can add it to the drinking water in the house so everyone will be cleansed. After the chose duration of the vrat, an udyaapan needs to be done inorder to complete the Poojan in a proper manner. You will need to prepare items like, puri, channe ka saag, kheer, and feed 8 children (boys). This can be done at any Santoshi Mata Temple. After feeding them you will need to give them something too. I gave them books, pens, and other things I believe will help them gain knowledge and the blessings of Saraswati Ma. In no case shall you give them any money.
Santoshi Mata vrat is KNOWN for its miracles! and it never fails. I stand to vouch for it.
check for all the details of method of pooja in above web site.
1. Do not touch curd, tomato's or tamarind or anything which is sour
2. Please sleep on the floor that day and observe brahmachariya
3. Even banana's which is a bit sour like that yellow banana cannotbe touched or eaten 5. On the day of udyapana, call small boys for lunch - feed them with sweets and give then some gifts. Give atleast 3 mutaiduvulu tambulam. 4.Naivedyam for mata santhoshi is basically jaggery and roastedchanna, or payasam.
Dear lopamudra, Nirjala Vrata is never accepted. One should have sufficient energy to do pooja/vrata and for that reason one should take appropriate high energy low quantity diets are permitted; they are sheeram(milk) and phala vargam ( any fruit) is permitted. and these are not considered as eating and the vratam is still considered as fasting
I don't think you can eat banana on that day. I think the below information might help you.
You can eat without onions, garic, tomato or any other sour flavoring . It can be taken during lunch after doing a 'bhog' for Santoshi Mata. Thanks, Ajitha
dear lopamudra, fruits and milk are allowed during all vrats.but the more orthodox limit themselves to only water.this is because our body parts does not work very hard on drinking only water and the stomach and other parts are also cleanised well.hence one can concentrate on god very well wen our stomach is not full and the inside parts are not workin hard enough.
You can eat ripe banana with or without milk on the vrat day. There is no harm in it. But make sure that you are not going for a small or green color banana as those could be of soar taste. Do the vrat with complete nista. I am sure that maa santhoshi would definitely fulfill your wishes.
Yes you can eat ripe banana during Santoshi Mata vrat. You should just refrain from eating sour stuff... like tomato( don't add it even in tadka), yoghurt, lemon, anything with imli(tamarind) or amchur( mango powder)in it.
