Soundarya LAhari( By Jagatguru Shankaracharya)
Well , u dont need book or a murti to pray. It is from the heart that prayers have to come.
1. So u want to do “santoshi matha varatham”and don’t have a book /murti! ! !
2..Listen to what Bhagvan has said in the Gita:
“If it is with great devotion and a clean mind that (even ) a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water , is offered, I receive that devotee’s offerings with much happiness” (Bhagvad Gita :9:26)
3.Also, “Arjuna, What ever u do Whatever u eat Whatever u offer (in a pooja or homa) Whatever u give Whatever austerity u observe Do it For me and offer it unto me” ( Bhagvad Gita 9:27)
3. JAgat Guru Shanakarachrya the all time greatest of devotees has said this (Soundarya Lahari: verse 27) &Roughly translated this would mean :
“May what ever I say be a prayer. What ever I do with my hands be mudras of a pooja When I walk let it be a pradakshina When I eat let it be what I offer into a homa When I lie down let be my namaskar Let every movement of mine be what u would be fond of Let my ever action be a complete surrender to you in a pooja ”
2. Also, are u scared that this is not what “SAntoshi maa “ has said? ? ?
“(If) He, with great deep interest (and )full involvement seeks his goal , (he ) fulfills those desires thru those very devas whom u meditate on , However only as decided by me ” ( Gita 7:22)
4. Vrats , poojas, mantra are from the Karma kandha of the Vedas. The Gita is said to the be Milk of the cow which is the Upanishads which is from the Jnana Khanda of the Vedas. One does not contradict the other.
3. Also , Vedic mantras and poojas are extremely difficult to perform ;That’s why results of poojas and homas are almost never felt manifested . where as if performed perfectly it is 100% guaranteed tha thte result will be obtainable. Mundokapanishad .( 1-2-3) potrays this thru what it says about failure of Agni-hotram . Roughly translated this would mean :
“ If it is not accompanied by
1. new moon and full moonsacrifices
2) 4 months of autumnal sacrifice(chaturmasya) .
3) sacrifice of offereing first fruits at harvest time
4) if not attended by guests,
5) performede dwithout woshipping of viswadevas
6) not performed as per rules laid down in Vedas. . .
. . . . then it will not only not help him , but also destroy him for 7 generations”
And this is extremely difficult to accomplish even if done with great care (even with a book and a murti ! ! ! ).
So wake up , offer everything that u do to God. When u get the book /murti u can do the vrat as prescribed, if possible

Hi Jyotihika - It is not necessary to have a murthi of Santoshi Mata, you can print a picture from the internet (there is one link below for a nice picture). Also, I have included links below for the katha (in English and Hindi) and the aarthi. You can use these during the each of the sixteen Fridays and Udyaapan.

The simplicity of the vrat is striking: it is be observed on a series of Fridays (some pamphlets prescribe that it be continued until one's wish is granted; others specify four months or sixteen weeks, a timespan popularised by the film) by doing puja or ceremonial worship with flowers, incense, and an oil lamp before an image of Santoshi Ma and offering her a bowl of raw sugar and roasted chickpeas (gur-chana).9 These are simple, inexpensive foodstuffs-the former a raw ingredient for making sweetmeats, the latter a common snack, especially of the poor-and the instructions require a very small quantity of each-in effect, a few pennies worth.10 That Santoshi Ma is satisfied with such offerings again underscores her benevolent character as well as her accessibility to poor devotees. The worshiper should take a bit of gur-chana in hand and recite or listen to the katha. Afterwards, the offerings in the bowl may be fed to a cow, or distributed as the goddess's prasad. The only other stricture is that the performer of the vrat should eat but one meal during the day and should not eat, or serve to anyone else, sour or bitter foods. When one's wish has been granted, one is required to serve a festive meal-which should likewise not include any sour dishes-to eight boys; this ceremony of thanksgiving, common to many vrats, is known as udyapan or "bringing to conclusion." The vrat story to be recited or heard as part of the ritual may be summarised as follows.
Already there is a discussion regd santoshi matha vratham in ammas.
