Mannanum Maasara Kattronum Seerthookin Mannanil Katron Sirappudaiyan Mannanukku Thann Desam Allaal Sirappillai Katrorukku Sendra Idam Ellam Sirappu meaning, if you compare a King and a Scholar, a Scholar has more prominence that the King. The King is popular and prominent only in his kingdom and outside of his kingdom, he is not; but a scholar is popular and prominent at all places wherever he goes."

QUOT ENDS.

I am sure we must be having similar writings in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and other Indian languages also.

This is the reason why parents are more concerned about the degree their children are to pursue after +2 (12th class/pre degree).

Subject:  Is Engineering degree a must for the pre...
Question:  Is Engineering degree a must for the present day youth?

In Tamil Nadu alone more than 500 engineering colleges are there and nearly one lakh students join every year for engineering degree. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka also have nearly 500 engineering colleges. In many of these colleges we find students whose parents are drivers, conductors, coolies, farm labourers are studying. Nearly 80% of them find it difficult to follow the lessons taught in English and struggle to complete the degree and somehow complete the degree with low marks.

1) Is it necessary for all the students to have an engineering degree irrespective of whether they like it or not? (many of them are compelled by parents to join engineering degree)

2) Why Governments are not encouraging opening more arts/science/humanities colleges?(not all those who complete engineering degree join in their field but join in marketing and other fields)

3) We hear parents telling that my son/daughter is not showing interest in studies and is not writing examinations, he/she is adamant/aggressive etc. Will it not be wise to counsel parents not to impose their views on the students but allow students to choose their own choice field of study?

I think the situation may be different in other advanced countries like USA, UK etc. What is the situation prevalent therein in this regard?
