Advise To Clear Off Debts |
| Question: | |
Here is the question: I will provide some background information on this situation and have asked my questions below by number. Please read everything before starting to research. Looking for help for debts for disabled americans. Etc...
I am a US citizen. I moved abroad in 2003 to stay with relatives after an accident and lengthy illness. I still live abroad. I was forced to leave the US with some debts left behind. Credit cards etc totaling maybe $6-7,000. I have not been back and may not go back. I am concerned about what has happened to these debts. My health is poor and I am surviving on very little income. I know that as of 2011 it will have been seven years since my last payment. Creditors suddenly started trying to reach me through relatives at home in the US over the last few months making me wonder if its a last attempt before the seven year mark to collect.
1)After seven years will anything be better for me?
2)If I must pay back the debts somehow with the modest income I have from disability, how do I begin such a transaction?
I cannot handle being harrassed by creditors where I am. Sadly I will never be in good health again.
3)Is there any debt forgiveness or government assistance for persons disabled and left with debts owing?
4)What happens after seven years?
5)What will my credit look like after a 7 year silence during which creditors never found me to contact me personally? I imagine I have been off the radar now for all of those seven years.
6)Will everything still show up?
7) Would getting a lawyer help?
I am not happy about not being able to repay debts but I feel helpless to do anything but be tormented by worry about these old debts.
Any information and advice is appreciated. Please respond to questions by their above numbers so I know what answer goes with which of my questions on this subject.

credit debt recovery |
| Question: | |
This question has come from a cell phone. Here is the question: This is a question about debt in the US. If someone had somewhere between $6,000-15,000 in debt including credit card debts and she became very ill and basically fell off the grid for something like seven years, what happens to those debts, if anything. Is her credit ruined forever? Is the credit slate wiped clean after a certain amount of time? All these debts were with collection at some point but this person ended up leaving the country to be cared for by relatives. No money was made during this time. She still needs to file some backtaxes for the last three years but her income has been nearly nothing. She would like to move back to the USA if her health eventually permits it but she has no idea what kind of financial mess she will be returning too. Should she hire a lawyer? Is there any kind of forgiveness arrangements available for people who are disabled and in old debt? She can provide medical documentation for everything.
Is it nothing too much for her to be worried about? Could she be in any kind of legal trouble and if so how can she find out without bringing old creditors down on her while she is still ill? Any assistance in the matter would be much appreciated.
