The Ask Amma™ FAQ

What is Ask Amma™?

The Ask Amma™ feature of Ammas.com allows users to enter natural language queries on a variety of topics and receive quality-controlled answers from registered experts ("Ammas").

What happens to my query after I submit it?

All queries are rated by the Council of Ammas in the topic you've selected before being passed on to the registered experts ("Ammas") for answering. Note: The Council cannot see your name or email when rating the query. Detailed queries receive higher ratings. Queries which can be easily answered by searching through Ammas.com receive lower ratings. Please see our Query Rating Criteria for more information. The amount of points an Amma earns for answering a query depends on the query's rating, so the higher the rating, the more quickly you are likely to receive a response from the Ammas.

Can I increase my chances of receiving high quality answers more quickly?

Yes. There are several ways to do this. 1) Ask high quality questions (see above), and 2) Increase your User Value by

What is User Value?

To understand User Value, please log into My Ammas. (Use the "forgot password" option if you don't know your password.) The higher your User Value, the higher you move up the user rankings of Ammas.com. The higher your ranking, the higher priority your questions receive from the Ammas.

How do I Increase my User Value?

There are three ways to increase your User Value. You can

  • log into My Ammas and add money to your account. Use the "forgot password" option if you don't know your password.
  • Shop at Ammas Mall where a percentage (usually 10%) of what you buy goes toward you User Value.
  • Give advice as an Amma. The higher you move up the rankings, the more User Value you earn.

Why are my queries rated?

Ammas.com receives hundreds of queries each day. We needed a way to prioritize them to prevent spamming, malicious use, and waste of time. The system takes many factors into account when priortizing queries. One of those factors is what the Council of Ammas considers the value of the query. Please see our Query Rating Criteria for more information.

How Do I know my queries/responses are rated fairly?

Your queries are rated by the top-ranked advisors in the category -- the Council Members. More than one Council Member can rate your query. The system takes the average. To preven grossly unfair ratings, Council Members who deviate substantially in their rating from their peers gradually lose points and fall off the Council.

What happens when I give gratuity while thanking an Amma?

Each time you give gratuity to an Amma your User Value goes up, and the Ammas ranking goes up. You can check your User Value through My Ammas. (Use the "forgot password" option if you don't know your password). User Value also takes into account the number and rating of the queries you've asked Ammas so far.

And of course, when you give gratuity, there's the satisfaction that comes with knowing you've helped an Amma who's been working hard to provide high quality information.

How long should I expect to wait for an answer to my query?

It depends on the rating your query has received and your current User Value. To see your User Value, log into My Ammas. Use the "forgot password" option if you don't know your password.

How do I receive a response to my query?

You will be notified by email when the query is rated by at least one member of the Council. The email will guide you as to how to view the response. You will also be notified by email each time a new answer comes in that has been rated by at least one Council member in the category.

What's the User Account in My Ammas?

You can store funds in your User Account for distribution at a later date. This saves money for everyone -- including yourself -- because it reduces the number of times the transaction must go through financial institutions, which take a percentage on each transaction. It also increases your User Value immediately! The money remains in your account for as long as you wish. There is no time limit, but the money cannot be refunded.

You can add money to your User Account by logging into your My Ammas page.

How do I judge the quality of the response I receive?

When you ask a question through Ask Amma™ -- if you haven't selected the "Special and Private Delivery" option -- the question is distributed to all of the Registered Ammas who are registered in the category you selected. When a Registered Amma responds to your query, the response goes to a special Council of Ammas for that category, who must approve and rate the response. When you view the response, you see the average rating the response has received so far. The rating will change as more Council Members have a chance to view it. You can also see how the Amma who gave the advice compares with other Ammas in terms of rank. Just click on the "Featured Ammas" link at the top of each category page and you will see the Ammas listed by rank.

I've received several answers to my query. How do I know which one is correct?

The Ask Amma™ feature allows users to receive several responses to a single query. The rating system will tell you which response the Council of Ammas rates highest. If two responses are conflicting and given the same rating, please submit the conflicting responses through Ask Amma™ again and request a clarification. You can also see how the Ammas who gave the advice compare with other Ammas in the category by clicking on the "Featured Ammas" link at the top of each category page.

Are the queries I submit private?

If you wish to keep you query private, you must select the "Keep My Query Private" tick box option when submitting the query. Note: You must have a User Value of 10 to use this option. If you use the "Special and Private Delivery" option, you will have the choice to submit your query to one Amma, a range of Ammas, or all Ammas. If you don't use the "Special and Private Delivery" option, the query will be published on the Ammas.com site (assuming it is accepted by the Council). Ammas.com never publishes email addresses. Please read our privacy policy for more information. If you are concerned about remaining anonymous, and don't want to tick the Keep My Query Private" option, please use a fake name when asking your query, or just write Anonymous in the name field. But make sure your email address is correct, as it will help you locate responses to your query.

How can I ensure that my query is private?

By selecting "Keep My Query Private," you can make sure your query and any responses it receives are not viewable by the public.

You can also select who will receive your query:

a) a particular Amma (or set of Ammas)
b) Council Members only
c) Featured and Council Members only
d) or all the Ammas.

Note: This feature requires a User Value of 10 or more to use. To determine your user value, log into
My Ammas. Use the "forgot password" option if you don't know your password.

What do the stars --   --   represent?

The stars show the average rating given by the Council of Ammas to a particular response.

Can I view the ranking of the Amma who answered my query?

Yes -- if the Amma is a Featured Amma or Council Member. Each topic has a link to "Featured Ammas." By clicking on that link, you will see all the featured Ammas in that category listed according to rank.

How can I respond to the Amma who answered my query?

Next to the query response you will find a link "Thank this Amma."

What is a "Registered Amma?"

A Registered Amma is any user who has registered on our site and who expresses an expertise in one of the categories offered by the Ask Amma™ feature. Registered Ammas also include "Featured Ammas" and members of the "Council of Ammas." Upon registering as an Amma, the user receives a password-protected web area to answer user queries and administrate a personal home page, which is publicly available. The home page, however, is only linked to Ammas.com once the Registered Amma earns enough points to become a "Featured Amma" (i.e. 20 points in a particular category). To register as an Amma, click here.

How do I become a "Featured Amma?"

Registered Ammas must accumulate 20 points in a category in order to become a Featured Amma. Registered Ammas receive points each time a response is approved by a Council Member. The amount of points a Registered Amma can earn for a response depends on several factors: 1) The user's Asking Points, 2) The query rating, 3) The response rating. The amount of points which can be earned for each query is listed next to the query.

How do I become a member of the Council of Ammas?

The Council of Ammas is comprised of the top 25% of the Featured Ammas in each category. Rank is determined by total points accrued for advice given.

Will I receive remuneration if I become a Council Member?

You will receive part ownership of Ammas.com upon electronically signing the Council Member's Contract. See http://www.ammas.com/release4.cfm for more information. You will also receive profit dividends if and when they occur.

Can I make money as an Amma?

Yes, we have started some programs for earning money directly as an Amma. Once you become a Featured Amma, you can generate vouchers and give product discounts to users, while earning a commission. The higher your ranking, the greater discount you can give, and the more commission you can earn. Ammas also allows Council Ammas to sell their services through Ammas Classifieds.

Wow! This is an amazing system! Is your software available for commercial use?

Yes, we've recently released the software for commercial use. It's called the Ask Agent (see www.askagent.com). It's currently being piloted with several large organizations in Australasia. We also offer our e-commerce solution as a separate software package. For more information, contact info@ammas.com
