Kadappa (green gram curry)

This is a side dish for idli or dosai. My mother-in -law makes it well and I learnt it from her.  

List of ingredients:

For the Kadappa
1/2 cup green gram dal or pasiparuppu  
1/4 cup coconut  
1 onion  
1 tomato  
1 big potato  
4 green chillies  
5 pods garlic  
1 big potato  
1 teaspoon mustard  
1 teaspoon urid dal  
1/4 teaspoon aniseed or sombu  
1 small piece cinnamon  
2 cloves  
1/2 teaspoon khus khus  
2 tablespoons oil  
coriander and curry leaves  

Cooking procedure
Cook the dal.

Boil the potato.

Slice the onion.

Grind the coconut with green chillies,cinnamon, cloves ,khus khus and aniseed.

Heat the oil in the kadai,season with mustard and urid dal

Fry the onions,garlic and curry leaves.

Add the chopped tomatoes.

Add the ground mixture and salt to taste.

Now add the boiled potatoes cut into pieces.

Now add the cooked dal and bring to boil stirring occasionally.

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Squeze some lime juice if you prefer.
Any additional information:
This goes well with idli and dosai.
