Q: hai my name is lakshmi.my skin type is oily.from the last one year i am getting lot of pimples on my face.can any one please tell me home remides to reduce pimples.please let me know.
-- sree lakshmi bandlapally, India Sep 06 06
A: Dear Sree, Neem is very efficient in the treatment of scars and pimples. It is a good herbal treatment and without any side effects. Hormones called androgens become active and stimulate oil glands in your skin, increasing oil production. This, in turn, clogs pores , causing pimples and blackheads. Hormonal changes around your period or birth control pills - starting or stopping - can also cause an acne flare-up. At puberty, the oil glands of the skin start producing an oily material called sebum. Sebum lubricates the skin. Sometimes the wall of the oil gland breaks and spills the sebum within the skin which causes redness, swelling, and pus - in other words a pimple. Plugged oil glands may form blackheads and whiteheads. Blackheads are not caused by dirt.

While stress can't actually cause acne, it will potentially aggravate this or any other skin condition.

Neem has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties which has the effect of drying up the pimples and controlling the itching.

To get rid of pimples and maintain a healthy skin, these home remedies are very useful.

Our body has its own self cleansing, self-purifying systems: keeping these systems working in perfect order is the best way of protecting yourself from toxicity.

Drink 7-8 glasses of water a day. 10 glasses would be optimal.

Remember your skin is the largest organ of your body and is the first to lose moisture and become dehydrated.

Almond Oil is good acne home remedy for dryness & inflammation of the skin. The outer cover (endocarp) of 2-3 can be ground with water & applied over the face daily. This is good for removing scars of old pimples.

Fresh juice of apricots applied on your face is very good for sunburn, itching, eczema and natural cystic acne treatment.

Application of Bengal Gram Powder (flour) mixed with curds is also a very effective treatment for pimples & other skin infections & allergies.

Green Gram powder flour, mixed in water or glycerine is an excellent face wash in place of soap to remove dirt without skin irritation, and also a very effective bleach for a good complexion.

Cucumber Juice alone or mixed with juices of carrot, lettuce or alfalfa when applied over the face is excellent home remedy for pimples. Grated cucumber can also serve the same purpose.

Curd or buttermilk is good for skin irritation. Curds along with wheat flour or bran is a good cleanser and beneficial for dry skin.

Fenugreek Leaves - A paste of fresh leaves applied over the face every night and washed with warm water prevents pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, dryness, wrinkles etc.

Fenugreek Seeds : A decoction made of 1 tsp. Methi seeds boiled in 1 ltr. of water for a couple of minutes and applied on the face is an ideal prevention for formation of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples etc. It also helps in dryness, wrinkles & is an excellent face wash & cleanser.

Try these and let me know the results.

Do not meddle with the pimples as it will worse and infect the other areas as well.

Good luck

Q: Dear Amma, I find your site extremely useful. Please help me solve my problem. I pack my kid's snacks (biscuits/wafers) and lunch (chapatis/sabzi/rice in aluminium foil inside an insulated lunch box)at 7:30AM . He says that the lunch gets cold by 12:45PM, the lunch hour. He has been bringing lunch back for the past few days. Pls help.
-- Prerana, Chennai, India Sep 06 06
A: Dear Prerana, The food wrapped in the aluminium foil will stay hot only for few minutes. You cannot expect it to remain hot for 4 hours continously. Use moisture-vapor resistant packaging. For packaging foods, coated or laminated freezer papers, plastic wraps or bags and heavy-duty aluminum foil are good. Thaw in refrigerator in wrappings. Frozen sandwiches may be thawed inlunchbox for 3-4 hours maximum. Instead, you can give him in a small hot pack which comes in various sizes. You can try packing the food in the foil and keeping it in the pack. Moreover, there are certain food items which will become soggy when opened like maggi, etc; So give some other items like idli, poori, for lunch along with potato fry etc; (not soggy). Do not mix one food item with the other. Good luck!!!

The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 169 to 175, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.9. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and no early application program is currently in place.

Q: My son made kumkum stains on a cream and grey mix carpet.I tried with spot remover and with carpet profissionals but of no use.Can some one advice me how to remove the stains. Will hydrogen peroxide bleach the color.
-- Sri 13, United States of America Sep 06 06
A: Dear Sri, If something spills, spot clean it immediately. The longer you leave a stain, the better its chance of becoming a permanent addition to your room. Never rub frenetically at a stain because this will only cause it to spread. It will also weaken the fiber helping it to wear out quicker. Use a mild soap such as dish detergent or shampoo to spot clean, rather than something chemical. Club soda and vinegar also work wonders. Never use heat such as a hair dryer or iron to dry a stain. This will just seal the stain into your carpet. Do not use bleach, as it will leave large white spots on your fabric. Hydrogen peroxide has chemical effects and it may result in bleaching and change of colour.

Products that clean clothing will also clean the carpet. Try saturating the stain with a laundry pretreating agent first and leaving it to soak overnight. After which, you can blot with a damp sponge or cloth until the stain is removed. If need be, try a little laundry detergent to clean the stain.

Good luck!!!

Q: hi, i have a 4 months old child. How do I bring her up with proper care and attention.
-- Anonymous, Unknown Sep 11 06
A: Dear Anonymous, Congradulations. It is really a sweet experience of being a mother. Though initially, you may find a bit tough to cope up with the new experience, as days roll on you will get used to it.

Baby care is definitely a topic of importance especially in this age of science and technology and more so in this fast world. Gone were the days were our grand parents used to narrate all the old stories and values imbibed in them. Now, we have to play their roles too in feeding those values to the children. 1. Always keep talking to the child whenever she is awake. That way, she will feel secured and she will know what you say also as she grows. You can find her respond also sometimes.

2. Whenever she cries, attend to her first. Do not allow her to cry for a long time. May be she may be feeling some discomfort or she may be hungry. It is only through crying that she can satisfy her needs.

3. Always give her a warm bath everyday. In the evening, wipe her body with warm water so that she feels fresh and active.

4. Give her some toys which are safe for babies (available in all baby shops), so that she gets some grip in handling. 5. Never keep anything that is sharp near to the child nor any open switch boxes, extension wires near her. Because of the curiosity, they may touch those points. 6. Only breast feeding is advisable until 6 or 8 months. Some continue till the baby is 1 year also. There is no harm in it. Unless you feel that the baby is not satisfied with your feed, you can consult your paediatrician and go in for formula as a supplement feed ONLY. 7. Always use cotton clothes so that it is comfortable for her and it is safe also. Do not use much detergents while washing baby's clothes. Use mild ones and a little antiseptic wash liquid along with it. 8. Change the nappies now and then. They may cry if their nappies are too wet also. 9. Take her for a stroll in the evening for some fresh air. 10. Sing some soft lullabies to make her sleep at night. Cuddling the baby at this age gives lot of security feeling to the baby. Always, keep a hand on her and sleep so that she feels warm and secured.

These are the simple tips whereby you can have a good relationship with your child. Tell her lot of stories when she is awake. Even though the child does not understand anything, she will watch your lip movements that will enable her to talk fast.

Good luck!!!

Q: Hi, I have 2 months old baby boy. I have one doubt I am using bouncer for baby with vibrations is it good or bad? And one morething always he wants to shake him when he feel sleepy somebody is saying that is not good. Usually for indians they always shake their babies......I am confused Please help me.
-- Shriya Y, Canada Sep 11 06
A: Dear Shriya, Instead of shaking him, you can sit in a rocking chair and hold and rock him. Some babies feel comfortable when they are in their mother's lap as it gives them warmth feeling. But, as he grows, it may also become a practice and you might find it difficult to shake also. So, it is better to put him on the bed and slowly pat him on his back until he sleeps. Keep some cushions on either side of him so that he feels that you are near him. Some babies immediately wake up, when they are put on the bed after they have slept on the lap. This will be difficult at a later stage. To avoid this, right from the start, put him next to you and pat him. This way, you also will not feel more pain and stress. You will also get some sleep.

Good luck!!!

Q: kindly tell me options of food for a one 1yr old indian baby
-- Majji, India Sep 11 06
A: Dear Majji, For old year olds, you can give almost everything. When the child is 6-7 months old itself, you can start giving solids to him. For one year old, you can give all all the foods like idli, chapati, dosa, upma, pongal, all vegetables and fruits, curds, milk, juices, soups, etc; By this time, he should have got some teeth. So,you can give him biscuits like marie (all small pieces), milk biscuits, etc;

Always be with the child when he is eating his food. It is good to make him independent when he is eating. Do not worry if he is throwing here and there. Slowly, he will learn to eat properly. Give him lots of water.

You can start with par boiled rice kanji. This is how you do: 1. Par boiled rice (Puzhungalarisi or idli rice)- 1 cup (Roasted dry for sometime) 2. Milk 3. Sugar

Firstly, roast the par boiled rice and take a desired quantity of it in a bowl with water and cook it in a porridge consistency. Once it thickens, cool a bit and add boiled milk and sugar to taste. This you can give him with spoon. Do not make it too watery as you will not be able to feed.

Egg is very good. You can give him the yolk which is high in proteins.

Good luck!!!

Q: if a girl should permitted to marry a outside person what problems she should face
-- Anonymous, Unknown Sep 11 06
A: Dear Anonymous, There is no hitch or hard and fast rule that you should not marry a person outside your caste. The blame is on the society. Society is nothing but "WE." We are the society. If we see everything in a good and broad perspective, definitely there is no problem at all. We are afraid like what people will say about us? whether our parents will accept us? What will be the future of our children if we marry a person outside?,etc; If we are clean and have a definite footing we should not be afraid of anything. Everyone should be afraid of their own conscience. There is no better teacher or guide than our own conscience. Whenever you are perplexed, ask your conscience. It will guide you properly.

But one thing to remember is: Marriage is a wonderful bond between two hearts. There should be mutuality, trust and understanding. When a marriage has these 3 things, it is a perfect pair. To make a marriage perfect or not, lies in the hands of couples. There should not be any ego clashes between them. If one can sacrifice, the other should also make some compromise for a good marital life. you cannot get everything from money. It is only from happiness and peace that you can lead a satisfied and a contented life.

Good luck!!!
